Description
First seen in the Franz Joseph Starfleet Technical Manual, the Saladin Class was a strange vessel from the outset. It featured a singular warp nacelle and its deflector was positioned on a pole that jutted out from under the saucer, giving it the appearance of a satellite dish. They were also much smaller than Constitutions, at a mere 242 meters long and staffed by only 200 people.
It was capable of Warp speeds similar to the Constitution; cruising at Warp 6 and capping off at Warp 8. It should be noted that despite the similar speed, its endurance was far lower due to the singular nacelle. It had two torpedo launchers and six banks of phasers, grouped in pairs of two. Saladins were classified as Destroyers, as they were rather heavily armed for a small ship.
In addition to the Saladin, a variant known as the Hermes was also made. Extremely similar to the Saladin, it was only differentiated from its brother with lighter armaments, with only two phaser banks and a single probe launcher. In addition, Hermes Class ships had a hangar bay on the rear of the saucer section for storing shuttles, whereas the Saladin only had NX drop bays.
The Hermes was also more geared towards science as opposed to the Saladin's combat orientedness. Boasting more powerful sensors and scanners, as well as science labs and equipment normally seen on planetside facilities, these vessels were often sent into star systems that were surveyed recently by the heavy cruisers, able to gather and process data at a surprisingly fast rate.
These two starship classes were commissioned in 2248, and by the 2260s over a hundred ships of either Class were built. They served with Starfleet for the best of three decades, even pushing through the Technological Movement Phase, or TMP era as historians called it. By the 2290s, with newer starships outperforming these vessels, they were eventually retired from active service.
