Description Inspired by the American Indian (mainly Iroquois) story of creation, of which there are a few slightly different versions.

Short story from Wikipedia:
According to Iroquois oral history, Sky Woman fell down to the earth when it was covered with water. Various animals tried to swim to the bottom of the ocean to bring back dirt to create land. Muskrat succeeded in gathering dirt, which was placed on the back of a turtle, which grew into the land known today as North America. In the Seneca language, the mythical turtle is called Hah-nu-nah, while the name for an everyday turtle is ha-no-wa

This is absolutely beautiful! The Cherokee have a similar creation story. I've always loved that one.

Thanks, glad you enjoy it! On the story I originally read, the woman passed and became the moon, so I had to make it an evening setting.

That sounds really interesting. I love the Native American stories. Some of them are really scary though. The Yeenaaldlooshi or Skin Walkers are one of the scariest ones I know of. It's sort of a shapeshifter/werewolf story from the Navajo, but it's scarier than your basic werewolf story. I've been fascinated by the legends of all of the tribes. I'm descended from both the Navajo and the Cherokee people. You did a wonderful job on the piece!

Heehee thanks again! As a foreigner in the US, this all is pretty new to me. The past months I was lucky enough to be brought to a couple Pow Wows, both organized by the Lenape nation (north western PA and Ohio) where I had the chance to see and learn a lot, and meet a lot of amazing people. Was totally astonished at how caring those people were towards me, a total stranger to them, and so this is a way for me to honor them back. Will probably make some more american indian related pieces in the future.
Here's the Lenape version of the creation story if you have the time, it's more in-depth than the one in the description: web.archive.org/web/2007111005…

Now I need to do some research about those creepy shapeshifter stories you talk about! Sounds like fun.
