Description Remember a while back when I said I could have done a picture of Lynn in a Red Wings jersey? Well, here you go. (You’re welcome.)

For this piece of fan art, I had another Loud sibling – this time, the family’s finest sportsperson – represent Hockeytown by being decked out in full gear from America’s most successful NHL franchise. I opted for a more action-packed (well, kind of action-packed) picture that made it look like Lynn was on a breakaway, or a shootout attempt, or something similar, anyways.

Once again, I’m not a Wings fan; I’m just wondering if the Louds might be, since they’re Michiganders and all.

(To any Red Wings fans out there – how’s your team doing? I’m looking at the standings right now – man, it must suck to be several points out of a playoff spot right now. Hope you guys move up the ranks, just like I hope the Canucks do eventual—Dang it! They let one in again.)

Behind the Scenes:

As usual, I sketched with a pencil, scanned and copied the sketch on a printer, used a fine-tip pen to trace over a copy, scanned the copy, and digitally edited the piece on Photoshop. Once again, sketch, scan, sketch, scan, and sk-edit. (Okay, that last one wasn’t actually alliterative.) Once again, I stuck with a simple cartoon style with the intention of getting the character’s features accurate (or close to accurate); I think I did a decent enough job.

Regarding equipment, I decided to upgrade Lynn’s helmet and stick from the ones seen here:

Instead of the red helmet with a single white stripe and the standard, run-of-the-mill wooden stick, I sketched a CCM-style bucket and a composite twig. It reflects that type of situation that happens with players that transition into the big leagues – gaining more accessibility to higher quality gear and other similar perks.

Interestingly, the original sketch for this picture didn’t include any of the Wings’ standard uniform markings, from the chest logo to the striping. It was all bare – in case I wanted to utilize a random, completely different uniform design for Lynn to wear (e.g. a fictional Team Nickelodeon uniform). When I settled on the Detroit Red Wings, I just digitally incorporated all the necessary aesthetic details onto the uniform – making sure to leave a copy of a blank template in case future plans call for me to do other random gear designs.

Curiously, I left the helmet devoid of any insignia – the manufacturer’s vector, a team wordmark, any other anatomical features, etc. I considered it, but eventually decided it would be too much work and that a simpler design would preserve the 2D nature of the piece, so I left it alone.

As well, there was supposed to be a visor on Lynn’s helmet, in keeping with the NHL rule about rookies and facial protection – while still being able to see her face. I guess I forgot to outline this part when I was fine-lining the copy, so it never really showed up in the finished product. Oh well.

Carrying on with the theme of some of the last few submissions, I decided to add a design to the background rather than simply leave it blank. With the background, I decided to blend together shades of blue – a very wintry colour – with red hues commonly associated with both the character and the team. This is meant to transition upwards from a light blue panel, which is supposed to resemble ice that Lynn is skating on. It’s just my way of experimenting with different backgrounds and monkeying around with the setting in various ways, which is what I like about this artwork.

Overall, I’m satisfied with the finished piece; it definitely considers various areas of the picture rather than just the focal character. Although I could probably tweak the helmet design in the future, redeveloping it in a way that makes it more “true to form” while keeping consistency with its 2D environment.

Thanks! It's nice to see something I did a few years ago still get praise.

Isn't it weird that people threw octopuses on the ice to celebrate a goal?

Lynn looked real good as a Red Wing, I would like to see her as a power forward.

I could imagine that too; that would suit Lynn pretty well.
