Description

Species: Eocarcharia dinops (Fierce-eyed Alba shark).

Time range: Early Cretaceous from Aptian to Albian (116 to 112 million years ago).

Geographic distribution: Known from the Elrhaz formation (🇳🇪Niger), although it probably had a broader distribution in northwest Africa.

Size: 7 meters long and 1400 kg.

Described in 2008 by Paul Sereno and Steve Brusatte, Eocarcharia is known from a partial skull discovered in the early 2000s.

Eocarcharia's forehead is swollen into a huge band of bone, giving it a menacing glow (leading to the specific name). Their teeth were shaped like blades and were used to disable live prey and destroy body parts.

Within 15 million years later, it will be its largest relative, Carcharodontosaurus, who will become the main predator in its ecosystem.

Role in When the Dinosaurs Roamed Africa: Eocarcharia has been shown to be the top predator in its ecosystem, hunting prey of Ouranosaurus and Nigersaurus. In addition, a pair of Eocarcharia males dispute the territory.
