Description
The red, white and blue colours of the flag represent valour, purity and sovereignty as well as recalling the flags of the United States and France. The diagonal white stripe represents the Missouri River from which the state takes its name which flows south-eastwards through Missouri. Taken from the state seal, the crescent represents Missouri as the "second sun" as it was the second state to be formed from the Louisiana Purchase, and the bear represents valour and vigilance. These symbols are surrounded by a ring of 24 points as Missouri was the 24th state to be admitted to the Union.
