As the capital of Russia's Far Eastern district, Vladivostok was the natural choice to become the new Russian capital following the Event. However Vladivostok soon found its position as the leading Russian city challenged by the more populous city of Khabarovsk. Located at the confluence of the Amur and Sungari rivers, Khabarovsk was perfectly placed to become the focus of Russia's mineral agricultural and booms, fuelled by the exploitation of the virgin lands of the Transbaikal mountains north of the Amur and the Manchurian Plain, drained by the Sungari. Vladivostok though remained the country's leading Pacific port, spearheading the colonisation of the Korean Peninsula, Japan and eventually central China and Yangtze river. While the rivalry between Vladivostok and Khabarovsk was playing out down south, the Sakha people, physically separated from the rest of Russia by the Event, were carving out their own quasi-independent state along the lower Lena. With the vast lands of China and Siberia to settle, the Russians were happy to leave the Sakha to their own devices while still maintaining that technically they were subordinate to Vladivostok.

Russia's naval voyages into the open Pacific beyond the Ryuku Islands brought them into contact with the Micronesians. Officially the Federated Commonwealth of Micronesia and the Marianas, Micronesia was a lose confederation between the previously American territories of the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam, and the Micronesian states of Yap and Chuuk, with the later additions of resettled Palau and Pohnpei. The confederation allowed the other states to take advantage of the American military presence in Guam, however some felt that this was at the expense of allowing the country to become too Americanised, leading them to found their own republic in the Marshall Islands. Other Micronesians moved west to the islands of the Philippines and the Malay Archipelago, founding various small statelets. Here they also ran into various Melanesian states founded by the myriad of indigenous peoples of Papua New Guinea who had moved to the area due to feelings of abandonment by the government in Port Moresby who they felt were too focused on reclaiming the Solomon Islands and becoming too influenced by Australia.

The old rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne was reignited by the prospect of spreading their influence to the newly uninhabited areas of the continent. Thus both New South Welshmen and Victorians moved to the lower Murray and the Spencer Gulf as each state claimed the land as their own. The NSW-Victoria "War" came to a head after the death of several settlers from both sides in a drunken brawl which spiralled out of control. Thus Canberra stepped in, creating the new state of Murray to bring order to the region. Thereafter, things quietened down in Australia, with Queenslanders moving both west and founding the territory of New Queensland and east through the Coral Sea Islands to New Caledonia, while Tasmanians were drawn to the similar climate of New Zealand's South Island, or New Tasmania as they imaginatively called it.
