Actually no..."The song gives a fabulist account of a ban on rock music by the Sharif or King being defied by the population, who proceed to "rock the casbah." " ( < from wikipedia)
In the lyrics it's pronounced as Shareef, deriving from the arabic 'Sharif' which means something like a nobleman, although according to wikipedia the word is used for those protecting a trible, like law enforcement I guess.
The chorus is often misheard as 'Sharia'.

I was wondering. I always heard "Sharif," but when I was looking up lyrics, because this reminded me of what a great song it is, the ones I came across listed "Sharia," and I thought, "Well, that makes sense, I wonder if he knows for sure."

Yeah I noticed those lyrics listing 'sharia' as well and it does make a lot of sense. I did some research to make sure. I actually wrote it as 'shareef' in an earlier version, but found out 'sharif' was the better spelling, atleast as close as it gets I guess because the word originally is written in a different script of course.
