rueyeet — Rant: Princess FRIGGIN' Zelda

Description So I've played a couple of the Zelda games, and am in process of playing a couple more, and you know what? I'm really coming to despise Princess Zelda.

When she's not sending you on horrific quests because of her visions or dreams or whatnot, she's getting kidnapped/ensorcelled/put to sleep, so that you have to save her by going on yet more horrific quests. She has GOT to be the most utterly ineffective character in the whole series.

The only times she DOES do anything, she has to be transformed, i.e. not Princess Zelda, to do it. Sure, she can run around pretending to be a man, or think she's a pirate, but that's not the same thing. The point is that the dear little Princess isn't allowed to be herself and simultaneously kick any ass, much less take any names.

Even when she's allowed to join a fight, she's more hindrance (or baggage!) than help. I got shot more times by her friggin' Light Arrows in Wind Waker than I got hit by Ganondorf. Damn Princess had LOUSY aim, and worse timing. You'd think the AI would know better than to fire when the player's between it and the target! It would have been so very much easier to kill Ganondorf without her "help."

Okay, I know the Zelda games aren't like Pokemon, where you can choose the sex of the character you want to play as (well, in the newer ones, anyway). And I know that the foundation of the Zelda mythos is basically that the hero is always going to be Link--the kid with the pointy ears and green hat--going out and performing dazzling deeds of derring-do for his damsel in distress.

I even realize that as the holder of the Triforce of Courage, Link's more likely to be the one getting his aggression out through his sword, while Zelda's Triforce of Wisdom means she gets stuck with the Sage gig--mysticism and prophetic dreams and whatnot.

But come ON. Even Princess Peach is getting her turn to rescue the Mario Bros. I'm talkin' to YOU, Nintendo.

So I wanted to imagine what Zelda would be like if she wasn't always getting kidnapped/ensorcelled/etc., and if she didn't NEED to send Link to do all her ass-kicking for her. The game relies too much on swordplay to remove that element, I think, but Zelda wouldn't need to consult any fairies before being able to use magic. 'Cause Wisdom can pack a punch, too.

This goes out to female gamers everywhere. *signs* Word.

Update to Rant

(with spoilers ahoy for Twilight Princess and Spirit Tracks.)

A lot of fans had high hopes that the one concept shot of TP Zelda holding that sword meant she'd at long last get to do some damage in her own right. Alas, it wasn't so; all she was going to do with that sword was drop it and cave to Zant.

And though Zelda did get to fight in the final battle, both as one of Ganon's stages (and whoah did THAT ever feel wrong, laying the smackdown on the same Princess I've fought through all those games to save) and then with a much more helpful stint as backup archer, she STILL spent most of that game sighing in a tower waiting for someone else to fix things. Yes, she did save Midna, but even that felt more like a transfer of responsibility: "I got nothin', YOU go fix it."

But in Spirit Tracks, things improved. Quite a bit.

Now, in my opinion, ST Zelda is a spoiled and ditzy little twit who's never had to lift a finger to do anything for herself, and I confess, I'm not fond of her personality. In fact, she's probably the most annoying incarnation of Zelda I've ever beheld.

However, she's very much a step in the right direction. Why? Because, for a change, she's USEFUL.

The idea of putting Zelda in spirit form was genius. It allows her to take a larger and more active role in the story as the guide character, without stealing any of Link's Hero thunder. But over and above that, she actually gets to stand up and fight and hold her own!

OK, sure, she still isn't doing it in the dress, but that's very clearly Zelda in that armor. Just get her near a mouse and you'll see what I mean. She's not taking on another identity or disguising herself to become effective, but actually USING her much bally-hooed Wisdom-y powers of hers to contribute to the situation. So much so, that there are fights Link can't win without her.

Yes, Link's still the Hero, and the spotlight's still firmly on him. But for the first time, saving Hyrule is a cooperative effort, and Zelda is really part of the fight.

I approve. And hope very much that this bodes well for the upcoming Zelda Wii.

I don't think a series has to "get with the times" if what has come before has worked. It may sound incredible, but not every female character in fiction needs to be overly masculine in their presentation.

Edit: As an aside, feminism has become a bit nuts as of late (within the past twenty years). What used to be a push towards equality became a kind of mafia that puts a red letter on you if you don't agree with them on everything. Hell, there are women that catch flak because they prefer to remain traditionally feminine and simply don't mind traditional feminine representation in the world at large.

You're supposed to wait for Zelda to hit Ganondorf with an arrow before you attack.

rueyeet In reply to SuperSmashSis [2011-06-16 15:33:09 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I know. But that's easier said than done.

She's not aiming at Ganondorf directly, but at your Mirror Shield -- so the two of you have to bracket him, without EITHER of you getting close enough for him to get a stab in.

OK, so maybe I don't have the mad gaming skills of a 12-year-old who can stay home and try it for entire afternoons, but I found this difficult.

Your mileage may vary.

haha. I've got to agree, having a game where Zelda was the main person would be awesome. I like Zelda and Link both,in all, but it's annoying constantly saving her.. When will Zelda get her comeback? I'm sure she wants to beat the crap out of people too Ahh, maybe some day (May as well hope for it, right?)

Awesome picture by the way.

Ok listen, If Zelda wasnt Kidnapped, there would be no Zelda games! It would have never happened.

and besides super princess peach, Peach hasnt really helped. just made you a cake..

And Zelda's aim is spot on, your just not good at wind waker, and not able to fight Ganondorf right, ive never been it by Zelda, nor has any of my friends.

Do you like peach? cuz shes the same, except Zelda is better because zelda games are funner.

Peach has her own game, where she's rescuing the brothers for a change. Granted, it's kind of a simplistic Fisher-Price sort of game, and no, I'm not that fond of Peach -- but at least she got a chance to do the rescuing for once.

Glad you and your buddies didn't have a problem in WW, but I'm not the only one -I- know that got hit by Zelda. Your mileage, and skills, may vary.

I'm not arguing that the Zelda series aren't good games -- I'm arguing that Zelda has never been allowed to be a strong female character (at least, not while she's in the dress).

Nintendo "favorites" Peach. They make sure shes ALWAYS better then Princess Zelda. I bet you half of the peach fans only like her for fan service.

Maybe you should practice more. I have NEVER EVER been hit by Princess Zelda.

Nintendo doesnt let zelda be a strong character because they are afraid it will make her look better and cooler then peach.

I dont hate Zelda, but i want to kill peach.

Interesting design, and nice overall picture.

As for the rant, it's stuff like that that makes me miss the old Cartoon Zelda. Now she could hold her onw in a fight, even upstaged Link a few times.

not sure what to comment really, but I saw this picture and thought it was pretty awesome I'm actually a huge Zelda fan, she is one of my favorite characters, despite her uselessness.. And when I play SSBM, Zelda is the ONLY character I use to play(not Sheik) but I just wanted to say, I definately agree, they NEED to have a game where Zelda is the main Hero! .. anyways so yeah. Love the picture, it'd be awesome to see a Zelda in a game like that!

I LOVE YOU. I'm always explaining to immature Zelda fans on why do I hate her so much but nothing puts it like your rant does! Sure, I liked Zelda in Wind Waker (She was really different in here than in the other games!) but I respect what you said. I really don't understand why does anyone like her! And I mean...sure, she could fight in SSBM, but that just proves that she COULD step up into battle and she never did!

By the way...there's this

Really nice drawing! And I totally agree with you. I mean, I still love Zelda a lot, she's cool, but yes, she is useless.
And I TOTALLY agree with this: "Case in point is the pirate thing I mentioned...in the most recent console release, Wind Waker, they've got Tetra, who's captain of the pirates that help Link out. She's got her crew under control, she's a good leader, and her moments of temper are feared by all. But she also turns out to be the reincarnation of Princess Zelda--and literally the minute this is discovered, she's locked away in Hyrule Castle in a dress while Link goes out and gets the means to power up his sword. Then she's kidnapped by Ganondorf. WHY doesn't she retain her piratey kick-assness? I ask you. It's like dress = Kryptonite to a strong female character. Even the Japanese should be beyond that by now."
Seriously! That was just so weird. It's like she had a complete personality change or something...how odd. xD

rueyeet In reply to Storyweaver1 [2006-12-11 16:56:09 +0000 UTC]

Nope, I didn't forget that...in fact I griped about it in my rant there. My problem with that was that she was still pretty darn ineffective. Seriously, she shot ME more times than she shot Ganondorf.

The bit with having to reflect her shot at him was totally an artificial level of complexity, too...if it'll damage Ganny off the Mirror Shield, it'll damage him in a straight shot! Why can't she just SHOOT him and ARGH.

Whoops, looks like I griped about it some more...

As long as it's nothing like the cd-i game "Zelda's Adventure" or whatever it was called. I'vee seen it, and it was total crap (but so are ALL the cd-i ones, all THREE of 'em!) But a Zelda that could use a sword and her magic like in SSBM, plus the puzzle solving and item finding skills that Link has, that would be awesome, and I'd actually have some respect for the woman ( I only somewhat like her in SSBM)

rueyeet In reply to Lock-of-Hyrule [2006-08-14 03:38:30 +0000 UTC]

I actually end up using her most of the time in SSBM...as Sheik. See what I mean?

The CD-i games, like the cartoon, were HORRIBLE. Even for the time. The animation looks like the best they could get were some slackers Ralph Bakshi had kicked out for smoking too much pot.

you know what...even though I HATE the cartoon, I still have three eps on dvd to watch when I really need a good laugh. I got it from someone I knoe from school, and he let me keep it. I just find it so funny, and even better in spanish! And I do the same with Zelda, if I pick her, it's only to be Sheik. But I have to say that some who use Zelda have kicked my butt plenty without having to transform. (Anime Mid-Atlantic 2005, got killed a lot in the game room)

Really? None of the gossip or screenshots I've seen yet seem to imply that--there's only the one concept shot of her holding a sword, and the fact that it's not the Master Sword, that's made people speculate she'll be more than her ususal passive self. Not that I wouldn't like to see the Princess doing some damage for once!

Oh, and the Nintendo execs said they'd announce release dates for the Wii in September (TP will be released on the same day as the Wii). Hopefully that means it'll be out in time for the holidays!

*bows* i feel bad because of sexual association (translation: CRAP, im a guy) welcome to the world of video game designers when zelda first came out... it tends to include men that think this is all right and proper, even though this view would very likely get them kicked out of polite society. hence the bad connotations on the term "nerd".

Oh, I totally recognize that this is a 20-year-old game franchise, and when it first came out, no one would have given a second thought to gender role issues. But things have changed, and it'd be nice to see a nod to that from the Zelda designers.

Case in point is the pirate thing I mentioned...in the most recent console release, Wind Waker, they've got Tetra, who's captain of the pirates that help Link out. She's got her crew under control, she's a good leader, and her moments of temper are feared by all. There's been some speculation that Zelda will actually be a playable character in the upcoming and quite impatiently-awaited Twilight Princess, but most of that is based on a single piece of concept art showing her holding a sword. She's also in a dress in that shot, though, so I'm betting a solid No.

Still, the Link in that one's gonna be easy on the eyes, so....
