Description There I go, had to jump on the bandwagon again.

1) Leo Ortolani: a recent influence, but I worship his sense of humour and comedic timing in comics.

2) Donna Barr: one of the first small press artist I discovered. Her, Dave Sim and Gerhard (Cerebus), Jeff Smith, made me discover that B&W comics can have a strong life and should not be dismissed!
It also gave me hope about doing comics, since I absolutely suck at doing colors, ha ha!

3) Bowie: the only musical artist that I have followed through the years, of whom I have all the albums, seen all the movies. Yes, even that spaghetti western one (Il Mio West).

4) Asterix: Grew up with the books.

5) Avatar; The Last Airbender: Look at my gallery. 'Nuff said (thank you, *PonDeReplay for this pic)

6) Mysterious Cities Of Gold: The first animated series I saw that blended adventure, a continuing story line and historical elements. My love for it hasn't diminished.

7) Gotlib- Grew up with his books (Rubrique Γ€ Brac). Fabulous artist, another one whose comedic I adore. I have sudden flashback of his work every so often.

8) La Foire Aux Immortels (Bilal): First adult bandes dessinΓ©es I read. Made me realise there was a world beyond all ages comics. You could read comics BEYOND your teenage years!! YES!!!!

9) Everyone I ever worked with!: That one feels like a cop out, but it's true! And it's not just people I worked with: if I've ever commented on your art, you can bet there's something in your work I've tried to walk away with. There's lesson to be learned everywhere.
Art in this panel by the hyper talented Ben Balistreri

10) Le Roman De Renart: A serie of short medieval tales. From an illustrated book I read as a child to actual old french texts with translation, I've always been close to it.

11) Ancient Egypt and history: very often at the base of many stories I try to tell. I said try!!

The Mysterious Cities of Gold!!!!
I ADORED that series when I was a kid. They aired it on TV three times and I always watched it (although I only saw the first episode once), it inspired my lifelong interest in South-American pre-conquest culture. Then a few years ago I was walking around a DVD shop and saw it on the shelf and scared the people around me by doing an impromptu celebration dance while squeeling like a giddy schoolgirl (I'm 34, very 'sensible' looking), Bought it, took it home, watched it... and the story was completely different from the way I remembered it, although still fun, and those fantastic 'fact docos' at the end were very simplistic (and of course now outdated info, in some places just plain wrong!). But watching it was the biggest nostalgia buzz, I was grinning like a loon the whole time!

It even had the a Soundtrack CD of the music, complete with the original wavering sound, bad mixing and everything!

Just out of curiosity, how comes that you know Ortolani, given that you live in the US? Did Leo become international?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rufftoon In reply to vampirisa [2011-11-06 01:46:24 +0000 UTC]

I've lived in Italy for 6 months (and have sinced then lost whatever little Italian I learned, ha ha). I fell in love with his work the first time I got one of his books.
One could only hope he could become international. He deserves it!

Indeed he does, he's a damn genious!
I'm glad to know that you liked his works even if, I suppose, you couldn't fully understand the language

You read Rat-man? It's translated in English or you read the original in Italian?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rufftoon In reply to FrancescoCammardella [2011-08-11 18:13:59 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately, Rat-Man has not been translated in English. My Italian is very very bad, but I can read enough of it to make basic sense.
I'm really behind on the Rat-Man comics though. Heck, I don't even have the Lord Of The Ring one!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FrancescoCammardella In reply to rufftoon [2011-08-11 18:47:54 +0000 UTC]

The "Lord of Ring" comics is a special, the second one, the first was "Star Wars" called "Star Rats" an the third one is "Avatar", published in two parts and in 3D (they were sold with the 3D glasses). I asked because Rat-Man is full of italian culture and pop-culture reference, difficult to translate, and I was curious to know who's such a genial translator...Anyway, good choice, if I could ever be half the comic artist Ortolani is I'll be Jim Lee

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rufftoon In reply to FrancescoCammardella [2011-08-11 18:54:35 +0000 UTC]

I do have Star Rats! I don't have Avatar or Lord of the Ring. Boooh!
I stayed in Italy for 6 months- just enough to get a few of the cultural references, but not all. You are right, you'd need a genius translator to get some of these jokes accross.
I'm a minuscule fraction of a fraction of Leo's talent. He is a genius.

Mostly in Rome. It was for a short time ( a few months), and I'm afraid I didn't see much of the country. One day in Milan doesn't count!

You have a lot of influence Franco-Belgian. I smiled when I see Gotlib. I had the chance to see some of his originals drawings when I worked as a volunteered at a comics festival. Un grand monsieur !
Same things for Bilal work and Asterix. I, as Obelix would say, fell into it when I was a child.

Hello, I'm doing this meme too but I have some difficulties with the font: I would like it to be black and white just as yours, but I can't find one. Could you tell me which font you used, or a manip t have this result? Thank you very much.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rufftoon In reply to Wild-Huntress [2010-09-29 05:40:23 +0000 UTC]

I used a regular font.
If you have Photoshop, here's what you can do: go to the layer that is your text. Right click on it and choose "Blending Options". In the new menu box that opens, choose "Stroke". Click on the Stroke box for more options. You can choose the color of the stroke you want, how wide you want to make it around your text, etc.
