I thought some of you may be curious to see what it looks like when I have an idea (ok, no actual pic of me, but you get the idea)Those are the thumbnails for the 3 strips of "Shipping Wars". When an idea comes about suddenly, I grab a piece of paper and quickly sketch bits of the main ideas, with first version of dialogue. Then, I think in terms of page layout.
So there you go- brain rambling in action!
Colerase blue pencil, with just a bit of pencils to darken a line or two.

It just takes me months to finally buckle down and draw a finished product...unless I'm extremely excited about it...

Methinks me needs blue pencils... again... I owned them once... lost them due to disuse.
My big issue is that I like to press hard and draw dark lines >.< That I can never erace when they're wrong... LOL Oh well, art is still a hobby for me ^-^

Sometimes they are, sometimes they're not.
Sometimes I can work directly from the really clean thumbnails. Saves some time.

woah!! those are waaaay more detailed than mine, mine are just the angles and the stick figures of where the characters are gonna be. this, this is a work of complete art!

The more cleaned-up, bigger and colored version is already in the gallery. No time for inking though, it stayed as rough pencils with colours added on.

I'm just glad that there's hope for me one day having an idea that doesn't require me jumping out of the shower and scarring my child with sudden dashes of naked screechings for my pencils and sketchbook. Seriously, this is proof that good ideas make it to paper before they're the finished product.

heh, you should see me when I get a flash of an idea in the middle of walking across a street. Can't really stop and take the sketchbook out. I have to write these down, or risk forgetting them.
I wish I was carrying a little recorder for dialogues sometimes.

When you do thumbnails, the most important is getting the ideas down on paper, not what it looks like. So Zuko chicken still works for me

Behind-the-scenes fun! Do you scan the thumbnails in and work over the base lines, or do you draw the main linework seperately?

Sometimes I'll do that. But those roughs were soooo...well rough, that it was better to just start from scratch. These ended just being guidelines as to what needs to happen.

Oooh, this is so cool. You really catch the movement and expression in this gestural stage of your comic. This will help me when I try to draw comics.

I love seeing how you work out the composition of the panels, is this really all the prelim work you had? Its like it sprung forth from your head fully formed to be all classical about it. Then again, you're a cartoonist, I guess you're used to working fast and pretty accurate. Anyways, its a great peek inside your crazy brain XD

Yep, that's pretty much it.
Starting from the top (basic ideas) then down (thinking in actual term of how many panels and all, opting for horizontal layout because some were too short for a vertical page)
When I looked at the thumbnails, I did change a few angles here and there, as it was getting a bit repetitive (thinks #3, first panel)

I was trying to keep the same face for Zuko in the third one, last panel. It is exagerated, but I wanted to keep something close to the original sketch.

Wow...I just go in with all the detail. ^_^;; Probably not the best idea. ^_^;; That's probably why all my attempts at drawing are doomed to failure. Man, you draw characters so well, even in the first sketches! It's incredible! *applauds*

If you go in with all the details from the start, make it your original!
If you're just throwing ideas around (or they just pop into your head), stay loose. That's one way not to loose the momentum and get everything down right away
