Description Phew..I really pushed myself on this one, and I hope it shows! The fur alone took an eternity to do!  It's not perfect by any means, but I hope that it blows all of the other paintings in my gallery out of the water.

Anyways, this beautiful girl was my cousin's cat, Princess. Against repeated warnings, a house guest left my cousin's door open in the middle of the night back in December. The search went on for weeks, but Princess was never found

If you have feedback, I'm grateful to hear it as always! I'm a painting newbie and I'm eager to apply any critique/advice to my future artwork

Such a shame what happened to their pet...

Nice diffraction around the edges of the cats fur!

Yeah, she tried to find her for quite a few weeks.  It's always heartbreaking when someone loses a cherished pet like this .

But thank you so much!

I have no idea which program you use, but there's a really good set of fur brushes for purchase here, bought them myself though I only use them for postwork (actually only once I think).

That being said, the image is lovely, a bit more on the stylized side.

I use FireAlpaca, so sometimes I'm not quite sure how to use the brush packs that I find.  But I'll take a look at these and see if I can figure out how to get them installed.  I think that I've gotten better at drawing fur since I created this drawing, but I still make each and every strand by hand - a little help from some brushes would probably help my efficiency quite a bit!

Thank you so much!!

I had to google that program. It can't use PS brushes directly.  Alternatives for the program would be Gimp or even Photoshop himself as the CS2 version can be downloaded for free directly from Adobe.

If you want to stick with the program you need a helper program that can extract the images from PS brushes and afterwards turn these images into brushes in your program.

As I scrolled thru your gallery one can clearly see the progress you made. So you are on the right track. Practice makes perfect!

Yeah, I actually transitioned to using FireAlpaca from Gimp, which I found to be very non-user friendly compared to what I have now.  I've been using it for so long now that it would be a rough transition to transition to anything else! I'll have to look into some of the helper programs though, or even just trying to recreate some similar brushes to them for myself.

And thank you so much!!

I have no idea about FA, but I heard from most people that Gimp is non-user friendly.  I started with Paint Shop Pro (when it still was owned by JASC) and switched over to Photoshop after Corel aquired PSP (because Corel programs tend to screw up my settings, so big no for anything Corel for me). Now PS also takes quite a learning curve and I was pulling my hair more often than not, but it was worth the effort. Yes, it is hard to switch a favored program, but sometimes it is for the better. The brushes, actions, filters in PS were worth the transition. Since it's free (at least the CS2 edition) give it a try - that's my suggestion. I won't lie to you, it won't be easy, but it may worth the work. Maybe this will change your workflow and you will be using both programs, like that the new one will be kind of a specialized program for certain things like brushes.

awww that's sad! I hope that wherever Princess is now, she's loved and safe.

On a side note, I think that your progress with the fur really shows! And the lighting. . . you're stepping up your game. Fabulous.

I agree with what you said in your reply to Flavia--while I like the expression, it seems a tad too cartoony here. But great job!

Yeah, I hope so too!

And thank you! Lighting was really one of the major goals on this one, so I'm so happy to see that!

Yeah, I'm struggling a bit to create exactly what I want from these paintings.  I guess i'm hoping to eventually find some nice techniques to settle into semi-realism, but at the moment I'm having a tough time with certain parts (faces, mainly) being much more cartoonish than everything else in the illustration. On this one the facial features aren't placed quite right, so it stands out even more. Thank you for the feedback Clarity <3

It's a pretty fluffy cat. Perhaps starting with a cat with less fluff could be easier for you. ^^

Nicely done with the fur! *u* The expression is quite nice too.
Some critique (lol): while I do know cats can have some wild shapes fur depending of the angle/pose, I find the "shape" a little weird at the right part of the face. It kind of break the perspective feeling, you know? Also, The dark paw feels like has a shorter fur, not really a problem but it seems like it's out of the place. Aand the background lacks a bit of shadows, it's quite plain xD Maybe add shadow below the cat, some gradient to make a distance of the light coming from the window... Also, you could make the palm more bluish or at least add some highlight like the onde the cat has.

Just me rambling a bit haha

Thank you Flavia! While I cared about the whole thing, the fur and getting some contrast in there were my bigger priorities with this one, so I'm happy to hear that you think it looks nice!

I'll link the stash image.  I think part of my issue with the perspective is that the photo's quality isn't awesome, but now that I'm looking at it with a fresh set of eyes I can see that I dropped her facial features way too low compared to my ref.  She does have that sharp angle, but I tried to soften it out a little bit, which perhaps only made it stand out more:  . I think I'll mess around with it more tomorrow, because now it's bothering me haha. Shoot, and I totally forgot the shadows.  Thank you so much for all of this advice, since I already put a bunch of time into this one I want to see if I can fix up at least some of these things you mentioned .

AH! I know you're not repeating the exactly bg from the photo, but it would be interesting draw the bricks in the wall xD
Good luck! ~o~
