“Hey Niki. I’m Adam”
Niki froze with both hands over her mouth with eyes like saucers.
“It’s ok Niki. I won’t bite…”
Niki slowly started to move over, but her hands were still over her mouth.
“I love what you’re doing for Haley”
“ohmygodohmygodohmygod”
“I’m not any kind of deity Niki, I’m just a little short”
“Come over closer so you can see him better” Sigrún added.
Niki slowly walked over, but there were too many questions in her mind to put one together clearly enough to say anything coherent
“Oh my god. You’re, you’re so tiny..”
“No shit, Sherlock”
“Come on over… don’t be so shy. Maybe you want to hold him on your hand so the two of you can talk better”
Niki held out her fingers just below Adam and looked at Sigrún’s face for approval ..”like this?”
“Maybe just hold your palm flat and a little cupped.” Sigrún carefully set Adam down on Niki’s palm.
“Maybe you could raise your thumb a little Niki so I can hold onto something. You’re shaking.”
“I’m sorry.. I can’t help it… this is unbelievable…”
“Besides Sigi you’re the first women I’ve seen in the flesh in over two years so you’ll have to excuse me if I stare a little. You look like a model even if you’re building sized.”
“Thanks, I think I mean… ” Niki blushed. “I’ve been trying to break into the business, but it’s hard.. “she finally got eye contact with him “two years? How did it happen?”
“I was make a business call about some contract writing. I was out by my car and suddenly everything went crazy and I blacked out. I was in and out. I was at the bottom of this huge pit maybe thirty feet deep with a lot of rubble. The next time a giant was carrying me and then I was in some kind of an animal cage with these giant people staring at me. I spent weeks like a lab animal until Sigi came along.”
“I was with a special laboratory that works with strange diseases and biological attack” she added “I was only out of grad school a year when this happened. It’s been full time every since. “
“The first time it happened I was a lot bigger”
“The first time?!” now Niki looked over at Sigrún.
“He was Barbie sized at first” Sigrún added
“I had a ton of Barbies! You must have been so cute!”
“How tall now..?”
“I’m nine point seven centimeters. It sounds a little better that way.”
“He’s a little more than three and three quarters of an inch tall now..”
“Oh my god. Is it still going?”
“Honestly we don’t know..” She was biting her lip and hoped no one noticed the worry on her face. The physics guys had an idea. I’ve had it sort of explained but it is the most bizarre thing I’ve heard. They did build a machine that could shrink other objects, but they never tried anything living. Clothing and other supplies were shrunk and most of them have caught up with him. That’s why his clothes are so incredibly delicate.”
“Can Haley be made normal? I mean if you could point the shrinker at her… and the grower for Adam.”
“They tried it. Millions of dollars and it exploded and injured a technician along with growing four women hundreds of miles away. Adam was completely secret, but you can’t exactly hide a giantess, let alone four of them. I can’t really go further than that except you can’t tell anyone about Adam.”
“Here’s the crazy thing. Right now I shrunk the same amount Haley grew.”
“This would make such a strange B movie. Now I know how she must feel being so huge. My god.. what would she be like for him!”
“Let’s talk about something else for awhile Niki. Tell me about yourself.”
“Could I put you on a desk so I can sit down? I’m shaking a bit more now holding you.” She said as she started to lower her hand.
“That’s too low. I’ll be looking up too much..”
She remembered what it’s like to talk to a giant. “Oh .. my boobs..”
“No, they’re fine, really fine in fact, but they’re a little distracting plus it’s hard bending ny neck like this.”
“Don’t I know it. Haley and I still haven’t worked out a super comfortable way to talk.”
“Here .. I’m used to this” Sigrún grabbed a pile of books and stacked them on a desk. “try it now.” Niki carefully put her palm next to the top of the books. She wasn’t quite used to it and Adam had to mark a large vertical step onto the pile. “Opps..” she said as she carefully took her seat so as to not disturb the pile.
“ ‘looks like a few more books buckaroos” Sigrún said starting over to the bookshelf.
“Don’t worry Sigs .. I’ll be fine.”
“I’m still a little nervous. I’m not used to this and you’re, well you’re a cute guy Adam..”
Adam blushed a bit, but she probably didn’t notice. “You can tell?”
“Oh I can tell! You look like you did sports. Track maybe?”
“Yeah .. mostly sprints and high jumping in high school.”
“Were you any good?”
“I did ok.. I like the feeling”
Sigrún interrupted “Don’t be so modest. He was second in state in the 100 meter and did well in the 200 and 400..”
“wow!”
“He still runs. We set up a track in a long room at home. A hundred meters to him now fits without having a corner. He’s a little better than twelve seconds, which is damn fine.”
“l’d love to watch. I was a cheerleader in high school and could cheer.”
“Did you do any sports” he asked?
“I’m five ten which is pretty tall - at least for a girl, so I tried basketball and volleyball. The basketball coach was a bitch and it just didn’t work out, but I loved volleyball.”
“So you liked volleyball, were a cheerleader and look like a model. What else?”
“Well… you know my name. I’m from Riverside which is a great area to get the hell out of. I’m no brainiac, but people told me I could model so I believed them and moved to LA. Oh - I’m a Gemini - also twenty. But you can tell that I bet.”
“I’m an Aquarius…”
“Oooh, you know what they say about Aquarius men and Gemini women…” Sigrún rolled her eyes and focused on her messages and email.
“So how do you break into modeling?”
“You tell me. I did little jobs that paid almost nothing. They tell me I would do well in porno, but it’s not me”
“You must have a lot of guys hitting on you” Now Niki was in serious blush…
“How about you? You’re a writer? You must be an English whiz..”
“Not really. I couldn’t afford to go to college out of high school and my grades weren’t that good. I took lots of starter jobs. My break came in testing electronics. It paid about five bucks more than clerking jobs.”
“Don’t you need college for that?”
“Naw .. you learn most of it in a few weeks.”
“ ‘best I did was $150 a hour, but it was only for two hours. I had to take a time off from Ralph’s. I think I just broke even.
“I wanna see some photos..”
More blushing…”I think any tall thin girl gets told that.. So what about writing?”
“I was going to leave so they had me write a manual for my replacement. They loved it and hired me as a consultant for three bucks more an hour. I’m more mature now I buckled down to finish my community college degree. That opened some more doors.”
“I never thought about writing other than novels or biographies..”
“Those guys are safe. Mine’s boring, but someone’s gotta do it”
“Do you do anything now? I mean how would you..? I hope I’m not embarrassing you.”
“No.. not really.. I’m proud of what I do. I can work from my iPhone. It does voice recognition and until the last time it was easy to type on.. Now it’s getting a bit too big.”
“I could help you! You could use me to drive a PC and your phone. I bet we’d make a good team…. so what do ya miss most of all? I mean besides your height..”
“Going out with friends to music, finding great IPAs, …”
“God - real IPAs.. that’s my sweet spot…”
“Yeah.. Austin was great for both. What kind of music do you go for?”
At this point Sigrún tuned both of them out and focused on a report. They went on for what must have been thirty minutes when Niki tapped her on the shoulder. “I’ve got about an hour before I have to get back and I’m starving. I was thinking about getting some fast food for us so we can keep talking.”
“I’ve got a better idea. You two are having such a good time, I’ll go out. Think you can handle him all by yourself Niki?”
“sure boss”
“Ok .. what do you want?”
“A cheeseburger and fries unless the place smells like grease.. a Coke too..”
“diet?”
“No, I’m lucky..” Niki said “It just hit me. You could eat the best food ever for almost nothing..”
“Only if someone else is ordering…” he said.
“I wish Haley could find something good. You wouldn't believe what a good cook she is.. at least she was. She was thinking of going to culinary school.”
As Sigrún left she tried to remember how she and Adam talked in the beginning. Those two really seemed to be hitting it off.

Wow, Adam has hit it off quickly... I suppose he's good conversation and if nothing else, he's definitely not a threat to anyone.

Their backgrounds are similar - not Sigrún's academic bent plus they're super-exotic to each other. She's never seen a guy so small and he hasn't physically seen another woman in two years.
