Description
“Come on Angel, what are you expecting?”
She never turned head, she didn't need to I already knew her eyes were swelling up.
“Do you remember a time, when it was a coin-flip on whether we had warm water. When we were lucky to have a week without mice.”
I push the script over to her, just close enough to see the title. She turns even more away, just staring at a blank wall.
“I remember a time when you said you would love me always, be by my side always”
I grabbed the script and took for the door.
“By your side, I've always been there. Do you think I'd even be doing this without you but the moment I achieve my dream you back off. The moment I'm not a loser and suddenly now everything 'gets too real.’ Well what was it before?“
The door slammed behind me.
I Couldn't help but remember valentines day, we'd been dating four months by then and I was certain that she was the one.
“Sorry about dinner, they make it look much easier on tv”
Her laugh just lighted me up, I could be in solitude for the rest of my life and not forget her smile.
“No, no, burnt is the new medium. I loved it, no joking”
Her eyes looked half sincere about it too, a bit of pity and laughter mixed in.
We stopped at the bridge, the river seemed close enough to touch. We just stared in silence at out reflections, . The ripple distortions just appeared to flow around us.
I pry myself away from the enchanting images.
“I...Every....”
I took a deep breath as my heart raced and my head drained itself of sense.
“I want you to have everything, no more crappy apartment, no more cheap food, I want you to have the earth and all in it.
I've put in for that acting job, yep finally got up off my ass. I have the audition next week”
She just smiled at me like what seemed an eternity, was I over the top? did I mess up the words? Did she just think I was pie-in-the-sky idiot?
“I don't need fancy dinners and expensive apartments. I just want you.”
We starred into each other's eyes, her blue tint shined brighter than ever.
“Plus where would I put the earth, heard its big”
I chuckled.
Inside however I couldn't help it, she may not ask for it but I just had to give her everything.
I wiped the tears from my eyes and looked at the door, still shut.
Six months away, after only back from another long shoot. Just one after another with a two week long break. He was beginning to feel more like a stranger who used our apartment for a hotel. It may as well been, he'd only been in the new place a few times.
I've followed his dream and he can't even remember my own.
He came rushing in, a grin like a child's.
“I got it, I got the part!”
“What?”
We jumped about the apartment like a couple of fools, my shoes crushing the long forgotten items on the floor.
It was all coming true, he would become a movie actor and I would soon be a fully fledged journalist. No more waiting by the phone for the agency to phone, no more sleepless nights for a piece that never even gets printed. I'd have my own office in New York, sure it's colder than California but I'd be in the big leagues.
“They actually offered me two jobs, in order to appear in the film I need to take a year long contract for the show as well. Steady work at least”
His enthusiasm wasn't dimmed, had he forgotten New York?
“Honey what about New York?”
“New York?” His face was overwhelmed with confusion.
“My full time job”
“Oh...I'm so sorry I completely blanked on the desk job. Well I mean it's only going to be a year, can you not ask them...”
“We've been over this, if I don't take it they'll pass me over for one of the other freelancers”
He looked at the floor, well what was on the floor. A quick glance around the apartment and I think he'd already made up his mind.
He looked up at me with his puppy eyes.
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I may never get another shot at this. Is there anyway you can keep applying for the places here and then in a year's time, go to New York?”
We'd both been trying for our positions for a long time and now we both got our breaks. Hollywood is difficult to get into, my passion for journalism wasn't about to die anytime soon, maybe trying in a year's time wouldn't be so bad. At least then we could both live ours dreams
“Ok, for you but one year and then we're off to New York”
The door cracked open slowly, it was only then did I notice I was still crying.
“I just called the studio, I turned the role down”
I wrapped my arms around him, my tears falling down his neck
“Thank you!” The noise muffled as I buried my head in his shoulder.
“It's been a bit longer than I expected but how about New York? I know a few people that work in stage and they've been dying to get me to try.”
“I don't have any places lined up”
“I met the editor at a party recently, I was saving this for a big dinner at the weekend but i managed to get him to take you on if you want it”
The tears started running down his face
“I told you I'd give you the world.
