Man, I'm so behind on your book dude it's killing me. I hit this massive financial debt spell and I'm behind on almost every book I read. I can keep up with most because now all I pick up is Wizard but I swear to god, Wizard NEVER does anything on your guys, you should write them or something.

Nah, Wizard is stuck on Dc and Marvel. Sucks to hear about the debt. I had to take a break from buying comics a few years ago also, you'll get over it eventually. And the trade paperbacks are pretty easy to find.

Well, I mean if you bug them enough they'll get all interested. I mean, I hear about the Goon in Wizard all the time. Bone gets a lot of recognition even though, though good it wasn't THAT fuckin' note worthy. I dunno, maybe if you get a bunch of people asking the folks at Wizard, they've said good things about you guys in the past, I don't see why they can't at least just do a two page thing on it. I dunno. Just a thought. You guys are more enjoyable to read than any Crisis or War the other guys can through my way. Shit, even Spiderman seemed to like Invincible.

I love looking at this sort of thing. I can't work out how you went from the pencilled background to the inked one in the first panel, all they seem to share in common is the perspective!

Which means you can draw backgrounds almost freehand with ink?! Being able to do things well IS CHEATING!

Joking aside though, that's really interesting. Was it really just one step, or did you do some work on the background before going to ink?

Anyway, do keep posting pencils, they're great to look at. We bought that Invincible poster after seeing the pencils progression here. Although as I remember it, that was another case of Step 1 -rough boxes, step 2 - amazing detailed city. I think you secretly employ background drawing nanobots.

RyanOttley In reply to Buml0r [2007-03-10 18:47:10 +0000 UTC]

I guess I should've said that I DID do some pencil drawing of the background before I inked it and AFTER I scanned it. I wanted to make the BG's nice so I spent more time on them, not sure why I scanned it BEFORE I was even done pencilling it. But most of the time, I go straight to inks unless there is a glaring thing that needs re-working.

That'll teach me to read the other comments first. That really is one step! I still say nanobots.

Oh, sweet page!

Say, do you ink with actual ink, or do you do it digitally? I can't get my inked stuff to look anything like this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to DF16 [2007-03-10 05:09:54 +0000 UTC]

I can't ink digitally. I use all Staedtler pens.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DF16 In reply to RyanOttley [2007-03-10 05:33:09 +0000 UTC]

Never heard of them. They easy to find? And are they expensive?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to DF16 [2007-03-10 14:18:53 +0000 UTC]

I was using brushes and quill pens that you dip in ink, that stuff is much more expensive. This Staedtler stuff is pretty cheap. You could find it online or I bet you could find the pens at your local shop. They could order them if they don't have them.

DF16 In reply to RyanOttley [2007-03-10 14:40:38 +0000 UTC]

Quill pens? I didn't know there were still pens you needed to dip into ink.

There's a big art store downtown here, I'll have to see if those Staedtler pens are there. Thank you muchly for your help!

Going to use it as refference for my own comic art.

so you do you have a pretty solid idea of what the interior of this ship looks like, or do you just put alotta vents, pipes, and hoses in the bkgd to give the space-shippy feel to it?
All your environments feel very deliberate and thought out.

RyanOttley In reply to mattcrap [2007-03-10 03:24:08 +0000 UTC]

Well they are deliberate and thought out, but it's not like I designed rooms of this ship. I eye everything really. Glad you like it. 40 and 41 are fave issues I've ever done. I definitely spent more time on the pages, it is more thought out than normal.

mattcrap In reply to RyanOttley [2007-03-11 18:54:31 +0000 UTC]

so it's not like you've got little shoe box diaramas of the martian ships sitting on your desk with little paper cut-outs of Invincible and the others....and you don't sit around for hours making laser noises and "whoosh" sounds until you hear your wife coming down the hall, then quickly throw it all under the table and start drawing again?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RyanOttley In reply to mattcrap [2007-03-11 19:54:58 +0000 UTC]

If I had more time, that's exactly what I'd be doing. But I wouldn't care if my wife saw. She already knows I'm just a big fat old kid.

I use this approach too. I like drawing better with inks than with pencils. I think Miller does that, too.

Really nice work here, Ryan. Superb.

Dumb question, what do you use for the inking?

RyanOttley In reply to Alheli-delaGarza [2007-03-09 20:01:47 +0000 UTC]

Why is that a dumb question?!? A dumb answer would be....ink. But that is not a dumb question. It's quite important actually. I use Staedtler mars 300 brush pens and regular Staedtler pens.

I guess that's the advantage of inking your own stuff, you can pretty much skip the clean pencils stage and go right to the inks. I imagine that's a huge time saver.
