Description Shepard woke up, almost buried in rubble. She felt a radiating pain all through her body. When she tried to move, her body just protested with more pain.
She groaned, not remembering much from what just happened. All she remembered was that she was on Earth during the battle against the Reapers.
She decided to ignore the pain and get moving, knowing that the battle couldn’t have been won yet. She started pushing herself up when a Husk leaned over her head. She used her omni-blade to stab the it, killing it instantly. She quickly got up and started moving, realizing that her position was quickly becoming overrun.
When she got to her feet, she quickly looked for a gun. It didn’t take long before she found one and grabbed it for protection against the other Husks, the Cannibals, and the Marauders that were soon to be flooding the area. She started looking for her team that she had taken to storm the beam that was supposed to be their link to the Citadel. She saw only dead soldiers that had been killed by the Reaper Harbinger on her way down to the beam.
It wasn’t long before memories came flooding back to her. She remembered calling the Normandy to retrieve her team from the ground battle because they had already been extremely injured. She remembered getting up after being blasted by Harbinger’s laser and entering the beam. She remembered how Admiral Anderson had followed her up the beam, and how they had met the Illusive Man inside. She remembered the Catalyst and the choices that it had presented her with, and she remembered what choice she had made. She had chosen to destroy the Reapers, but she was confused. When she looked up, all of the Reapers were still attacking the force she had gathered together, and the ground troops were still fighting easily as well. She knew that something wasn’t right.
She checked to see if her radio was still working, and luckily, it was. She quickly started trying to contact someone.
“Hello...? Is anyone on this frequency...?” She spoke through the pain; every movement, every vibration, every little touch hurt like a roaring fire.
“Commander? Is that you?” A soldier’s voice came over the radio. “You’re okay?”
“I’m hanging in there, at least... What’s been happening...?” Shepard asked, trying to make her way to a safer area.
“The battle’s getting hectic. Our people are dying! We heard that Hammer was wiped out, and Major Coats called a full retreat so we could regroup,” the marine said.
“Full retreat? Anderson said no one retreats, no matter what happens. The Major was right there when he said that. Why would he order a retreat when it went against Anderson’s orders?” She asked herself.
“I don’t know, Commander, but we needed it. We’re trying to figure out our next move,” the marine answered.
“Alright. Send me the coordinates, and I’ll be there soon. If the Major tries giving any other suspicious orders, let me know,” she said.
“Yes, Commander,” the marine replied, and Shepard quickly rushed for the camp after receiving the coordinates from him. She had to stop and take a lot of breaks because of the pain, but her body soon began to feel numb. She tried finding the frequency that the Normandy was on while she was walking, but she had no such luck.
When she reached the camp, the marine ran up to Shepard, but something seemed off about his demeanor.
“Soldier, what’s wrong?” She asked.
“It’s the Major. He just gave the order to bring any newcomers to him. He seemed to have the intent to kill them,” he replied. Shepard just nodded.
“Bring me to him,” she said.
“But, Commander-”
“Now, soldier,” she demanded. The marine just nodded, helping her through the camp. The rest of the soldiers in the camp stared at Shepard as if she were a ghost.
“Commander Shepard! You’re okay!” One of the soldiers called. She just waved, in too much pain to do much else.
“Commander, maybe I should take you to the medical tent before I take you to the major.”
“What were his instructions?” Shepard asked him.
“Bring any newcomers straight to him, no exceptions,” he sighed.
“Then do it, and when you’re done with that, go contact my ship. I need to know that my crew is safe,” she ordered him.
“Yes, Commander,” he replied, helping her straight up to Major Coats.
“Commander Shepard,” Coats said, almost stunned to see that she was alive. “You’re okay. I’m so glad to see you. Did anyone else from Hammer make it out of there?”
“I don’t know, Major. Anyway, we need to talk,” she said.
“Of course, Commander,” he replied, waving off the marine. He looked at Shepard who nodded before leaving.
“What did you wanna talk about, Commander?” Coats inquired.
“Why did you order a retreat when Admiral Anderson said that no retreat, no matter what?” She returned.
“I... Well, I, uh... I just thought that we needed to regroup, Commander,” he replied, obviously trying to sound convincing, but Shepard obviously didn’t seem to believe him which just made him nervous.
“No matter what, Major...” She said, staring him down, which just made him even more nervous. Finally, he lunged at her, throwing a punch. She was in too much pain to move quick enough and caught his fist with her left cheek. She fell backward and hit the ground hard. She laid there for a moment, then started pushing herself back up as Coats jumped over her, racing for the door to his tent. Shepard took the pistol she had found and fired, but that didn’t even slow him down. She quickly moved for the door to the tent and continued shooting at him, taking down his shields. One of the other soldiers tried to stop her, but she shot him in the back of the knee, taking him down. She started moving, but was stopped by the soldier.
“Commander, what the hell are you doing?!” She cried.
“I’m stopping one of the Reapers’ slaves, now if you don’t back off, I will fight back,” Shepard growled. The soldier immediately backed off, and Shepard approached Major Coats who was struggling to get up, his kneecap completely blown out. Shepard put her boot on his back, pushing him back to the ground.
“You’re indoctrinated... You have been from the start, haven’t you?” He just growled back at her, then tried to throw her off. She just pushed harder, then she aimed her gun at his head.
“You sniveling piece of trash...” She took the shot, killing him instantly. The soldiers stared at her, completely confused. She started heading to the med tent.
Soon, the soldier who had helped her through the camp walked into the med tent.
“Commander, what the hell did you do to Major Coats?” He asked.
“I killed a Reaper slave. There was nothing that could have been done to help him,” she replied, then winced as the doctor rubbed some medication on her arm for her burns. “Did you get a hold of the Normandy?”
“Yes, Commander. They’re sending a shuttle to pick you up, right now,” he replied.
“No. I need to stay here so that I can get back to the beam and to the Citadel to open the arms for the Crucible,” she protested.
“Commander, the entire fleet gave up on the Crucible. We’re done fighting for it. We’re just gonna let the Reapers win,” he explained.
“What? After all we’ve worked for? After all I’ve done for this entire galaxy? I’ve worked my ass off to get us here, and we’re not giving it up, now,” she growled.
“Yes... Commander...” He sounded worried.
“I need to talk to the Normandy crew,” Shepard said, getting up and heading out of the med tent.
“Commander, I haven’t finished applying medicine to your wounds!” The doctor scolded.
“I don’t care,” she replied, heading straight for the comm terminal.
“Connect me to the Normandy,” she told the technician.
“Yes, Commander,” he replied, doing as she had ordered. When he called the Normandy, Liara answered.
“Commander?” She sounded surprised.
“Yeah, it’s me. Don’t send a shuttle to pick me up. I’m not coming back. Send me a team instead,” she ordered.
“What? Commander, you look terrible even from here. You need to be seen by a medical professional, and-”
“Liara, don’t argue with me. I’ve already been through enough today, so send me a team... A team that’s willing to follow me to the beam and up to the Citadel. If you all wanna come, I don’t care, but you’d better get your asses down here,” she interrupted. Liara was surprised, but she just nodded.
“Of course, Commander. We’ll be there as soon as we can be,” Liara replied. She ended the call and left Shepard to the soldiers on Earth. The medical technician took her back to the med tent and continued helping her heal.
It wasn’t long before the entire team had arrived. James, Liara, Tali, EDI, Kaidan, and Garrus had all come back to Earth to help her. Garrus ran into the med tent first, then ran over and attacked Shepard with a hug.
“Damn it, Shepard... You can’t do that to me... We heard that Hammer was wiped out... I thought you were dead...” He said, holding her close.
“I’m fine... I thought I was dead, myself,” she replied, the rest of the team walking in.
“What?” He asked, pulling away to look her in the eye. She recounted what she thought had been her experience on the Citadel before she had awoken on Earth in the rubble.
“I don’t know what really happened, or why I saw all of that, but...” She trailed off, trying to think.
“Could the Reapers have been trying to indoctrinate you?” James asked. She looked up.
“James!” Liara cried.
“Look, I mean no disrespect, but from what we’ve learned and seen of indoctrinated people and from what we’ve heard, I think it might be possible,” he replied.
“Shepard is not indoctrinated, James. Otherwise, she’d be trying to kill us right now,” Kaidan said.
“I’m not saying that they did indoctrinate her, but maybe they were trying to,” James explained.
“That’s highly unlikely,” Liara replied.
“Actually, I think it might be possible,” Shepard said. “Now that I think about it, I’ve been having these really weird nightmares recently. They were... More than creepy, and I had trouble making a decision when I thought I was on the Citadel talking to that kid. I think I broke it, though.”
“Shepard...” Garrus started.
“Look, this is the clearest my thoughts have been since I got hit by that Reaper artifact just before they arrived, so I’m not opposed to something like that. I think they might have been trying, but something in me just said that they were wrong,” she explained.
“Then, how did you break it?” Kaidan asked. “No one else has ever been able to break free from indoctrination. How did you do it?”
“I don’t think I did. I think I just told them ‘no’, just like I always have,” she replied.
“Then what’s our next step?” James asked.
“Get to the beam and get onto the Citadel,” Shepard declared.
“Are you sure you’re ready for this, Shepard?” Garrus asked.
“Positive. Let’s give ‘em hell,” she replied, climbing off the table and leading her team out the door.
They headed back to the beam which was still glowing brightly. It was now early morning, and the sun was starting to rise.
“Let’s move,” Shepard ordered, heading straight for the beam. Her entire team followed, shooting down the Reaper ground troops that tried attacking them. When Shepard made it to the beam, she stepped inside, her team following close behind, and they were all spit out onto a platform on the presidium.
“The presidium?” Kaidan said, confused.
“Of course. The main control panel is here,” Shepard explained, everything starting to make sense, now.
“Oh yeah. Now I remember. It’s in the Citadel Tower. That’s where we went when we were fighting Saren,” Kaidan said. Shepard started leading them around the presidium.
When they reached the Citadel Tower, they all squeezed into the elevator, having just enough room for all of them. The elevator took them up about half way before dying out.
“Damn it...” Shepard sighed.
“Isn’t there an outside hatch somewhere on the side of the tower?” Tali asked.
“Yeah, there is... Why can’t anything just be easy?” She sighed, putting on her helmet. Tali blasted out the glass on the door and they climbed out. They followed the path where Geth remains still laid from the Battle of the Citadel against Sovereign.
When they reached the hatch, Kaidan pried it open, letting the rest of the crew climb in before following them down himself. Once inside, they followed the path to the Council’s chambers, and Shepard activated the main control terminal. She opened the arms of the Citadel and contacted Admiral Hackett over the radio.
“Admiral Hackett, this is Commander Shepard. The Citadel is open and ready for the Crucible to dock.”
“Commander? You’re alive?” He asked.
“Thankfully, yes, I am. I’m on the Citadel with my team. We got to the beam, and opened the Citadel,” she replied.
“Good. We’ll bring it in. Thank you, Commander,” he said.
“Just doing my job, Admiral,” she said back, then sat down, just trying to relax. Her team sat with her, happy to accompany her on this extremely important mission.
When the Crucible docked, the terminal blinked with a call. Shepard looked at it skeptically, but she answered. It was Harbinger.
“Shepard. You continually defy our work. You will not survive,” it said.
“We’re docking the Crucible, and we’ll destroy you easily,” she retorted.
“Ignorant human. You do not understand. You will never understand,” it growled its metallic growl at her.
“Well, if you’d explain it to us, then maybe we’d understand,” She replied.
“You would destroy us to let the dark energy spread. You have delayed our efforts for years, yet you do not see that you are your own demise,” it said. Shepard raised an eyebrow, not quite understanding, but Tali quickly caught on.
“Dark energy! Of course! That’s why they’re fighting us!”
“Tali?”
“Shepard, do you remember how Haestrom’s sun was too young to be acting like it was?”
“Yeah, the entire surface of the planet was cooking because the sun was dying.”
“That’s because the dark energy was decaying it. The Reapers have been trying to stop it this whole time.” Shepard’s eyes grew wide in realization.
“Then what was with the human Reaper?”
“Your race is the last hope for this galaxy. Your genetic diversity makes you the perfect variable,” Harbinger explained.
“Damn it... What if we could find another way?”
“That is impossible,” it replied. Shepard just smirked.
“You’ve never seen human creativity.” She said.
“Your race is creative, but not enough to stop the inevitable.”
“Bullshit. You’re done. I’m not turning my race into a heartless monster to try and save the rest of the galaxy. We’ll find another way to stop it,” She said, then pressed a button on the main control terminal to end the call, then she used it to fire the Crucible. There were cheers over the radio of how the Reapers were dead and the entire galaxy had been saved.
“Let’s go home,” Shepard said as they headed back for the entrance to the Citadel Tower.
