Description Great Blue Herons are the largest herons in North America, and are excellent hunters. They will eat anything from fish and dragonflies, to small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and even other birds. Although most people associate these birds with water, I have observed them walking through open fields eating Meadow Voles on several occasions. This is a pretty unique view of this species, and is an angle I have been trying to achieve for quite awhile. The rainy conditions made for some nice soft light.

Very unusual shot - congratulations! I used to live on the cape and would see herons a lot - but I never got close enough for a shot like this

You can really see how the eyes are directed down here, I'd never seen that before.

Birds with this general shape (e.g. cranes, herons, egrets, storks, and so on) look sooo strange from this angle! Great capture!

They certainly are funny from that angle
I must admit
I have a similar shot without the rain and not posted
but I thought they look like a totaly different bird when
they face you that way

I saw one of these a few days ago and I was amazed at how big it looked, even though it was a several yards away and flying off in the other direction.

They look so awkward when you look them straight on. Love this pose and the rain in the background.
