Description I have been trying to get a decent shot of this amazing species for three years, but up until now I had only managed a few large crops. After arriving for sunrise and having seen only a few Harlequins fly by, three male Harlequin Ducks came in for a splash landing a few feet away from where I was laying on the rocks. One of them climbed on a rock in front of me, and posed in good light. This is a full frame image. It seriously doesn't get any better than that. The Harlequin Duck is an incredible bird. Renowned as one of the most beautiful birds in the world, they are a white-water species that thrives along surf battered rocky coasts in the winter. They dive underwater to feed, and have even been known to walk on the bottom. Although it may look like I blew the whites here, the patches on the Harlequins are blindingly white.
