Description The story I wrote recently got me thinking of their masks, how we stereotype them as the fool, the nerd, the jerk and the stuckup.
Meanwhile: they're a lot more complex now than in their past incarnations.

I think so, at least.Β

I'm thinking of doing this with Liz. Any advice for an MS Paint artist, hehe?

Actually (I just saw this after I started the drawing, haha) I think I'm doing decently right now. I was thinking of how to position her, but I'll take your advice. I've tried, but I'm just sticking with what I'm familiar with for now in terms of programs. I just mentioned you in my WIP post of it, and I'd like your opinion.

Your drawing definitely has potential.
Be sure to look at aspects like the arms and shell to make sure they are in good proportion.

I triple-checked, and everything seems to match up okay. The only thing I'm a little iffy about is the heads shape since it's supposed to be similar to Leo's. I can draw it straight on, but other angles baffle me.

That's what I love about the 2012 TMNT. The characters are so much deeper and more complex, from the turtles themselves to the villains. We see the turtles as MORE than just a nerd, a leader, a hot-head, and a screwup. We see true heroes that struggle and strive; we see heroes that are beaten, physically and emotionally, and they get back up; we see heroes that face the most dastardly villain: heartbreak, and they still get up and fight. And THAT is why I LOVE this version of TMNT the best!

They're always deeper than the cartoon. The only media ever explore their characteristics and personalities is the comics...

Mainsteam doesn't really stick to the comics though.Β
As seen in almost every super hero movie ever

Very neat idea.
They've changed much since Mirage comics and the 2003 series as well.

I think the expressions now are a lot more realistic, awesome job with this ( and also kudos to drawing the without a mask )

I love the shy expression of Leo.You are right when you say that their personality can cover several aspects and latitudes. We are not static in our mood / personality. For example, Mikey can still be a prankster and Raph sullen. Experiences, age, encounters give us dimension, so it's normal that they evolve and take on depth. I really like how you represented this idea.

Sorry I mean:
Thank you. I confess that I do make good use of their stereotypes when writing.
It's actually quite hard to imagine them in any other way that that which they have been given.

caroaimezoe In reply to Ryu-Amio [2017-02-27 22:15:56 +0000 UTC]

I just read my last comment. Google translate don't do a good job all the times. I mean:Β The stereoptype serves to differentiate them and also to make them more endearing and easier to identify. Indeed, playing with the so-called "dominant" aspect of their personality is appealing. But Mikey, for example, even if he is a jester, does not always have to be. As you wrote in your last fic, even a jolly fellow like him can sometimes have a dark side and live frustrations with difficulty

Ryu-Amio In reply to caroaimezoe [2017-02-27 22:28:14 +0000 UTC]

I myself also try and stick to their given character when writing.
I suppose it's for the best though.

I imagine TmnT 2032 on Cartoon Network were Mikey is suddenly the deep, dark and mysterious one, won't go over well with fans.Β

Good cue, using the original toon masks to make your point.
The original comics worked well to flesh out the Brothers Four. The cartoon show was as shallow as a puddle, and was even mocked by the infamous "1980s Watchmen" opening spoof video as to how much it defanged and sugar-coated the story and characters.

Ryu-Amio In reply to TheAtomicDog [2017-02-27 20:43:23 +0000 UTC]

To be fair, at the time it was just a Saturday morning cartoon aimed at kids.
"Character Depth" had no place there.
But those shallow personalities have stayed with them for several decades now.
We can't even imagine them acting any different.

TheAtomicDog In reply to Ryu-Amio [2017-02-27 21:24:20 +0000 UTC]

"Character Depth had no place there."
Tell that to all the 80s and early 90s Disney toons that did just that. Hell, the Smurfs did character depth.
Now, the Turts WERE Fearless Leader, the Hot Head, the Nerd and the Baby Brother from the comics, from day one. And they're meant to be adolescent males so of-course there's that natural ration of stupidity and immaturity that all teen boys have, granted. But the original show was to the comics what the Adam West Batman show was to that title. So dumbed down it was just sad. And again, this group portrait plays on that.

I had intended to have them wear "faces" from the various versions of themselves, 2003, the movie etc.... but I'm glad I decided to go back to the first incarnation were "wearing the red mask masks you the cool but rude one"

Mhm, I think that’s the beauty of this fandom. How the Four are developed throughout the whole 33 years is the perfect mix focused enough the Four are individual, yet simple enough allowing creative freedom spinning our own interpretations of them. The original creators (Kevin Eastman andΒ Peter Laird) even allowed (although indirectly) the freedom of Tcest.

Ryu-Amio In reply to papetto-manipyureta [2017-02-27 18:41:49 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. Even while they are now these complex individuals,
many still find it strange to see or read about them acting "out of character".

I think that when they act in the way we except them to act,
we as fans feel comforted that things still stay the same at their core, even though everything changes.
