Description He was but a boy then
But a stupid boy was he,
Giving away mangoes for petty stones!
"This trade will do well for both you and me!"

Likely foretold by destiny,
Along came a man from a distant land,
And poor Philippines, clueless as can be,
Wholeheartedly took his divine hand.

Yes, it was he, Great Spain,
Who changed Juan's life forever.
Soon, Boss Spain had feared China for the worst
And threatened him to return never.

"Viva Espana!, you tell me to say,
But what have you done to my friend?"
Spain looked at Philippines in the eye,
"Your bonds, your ties, put it to an end!"

"You are solely mine, and mine alone!
Forsake me not, for you won't live
If not for my holy entity;
Dios mio, take what I have to give!"

"I have had enough!" Juan took up arms
And fought his divine master.
Finally!  A taste of freedom!
But from the new world came another.

"My name is America,
From the land of the free!"
And he assured to Philippines,
"I will grant you liberty!"

But behind all this heroism
Lies gold and a secret agreement,
So Spain then staged his loss to America,
And ended the Spanish regiment.

It was finally over,
A new era had begun to surface.
But Juan soon began to doubt;
From America, he smelt a new menace.

"Lo, I am living a lie!"
And Philippines fought once again.
In the end, America granted him liberty,
But they still stayed as friends then.

Ah, but our story ends not there,
For another invader steps in.
The time was World War Two,
A time when the world was shrouded in sin.

As Philippines, weary of recent,
Walked by his great mango trees,
The most beautiful thing caught his eye;
A woman, as graceful as the blue seas.

But Philippines was struck
Not to know he plays with fire,
For Japan was a sly lady
Filled with fearful desire.

Japan swiftly attacked America,
And forced him with a decision;
"I shall return!" he promised,
And left Philippines in this situation:

He followed Japan like a shadow,
And wagged his tail to her every command;
If he had done wrong, he was punished,
And tired himself in his own land.

Philippines was slowly dying,
But he needed to stand,
"I can make it, I can fight forever!
Kalayaan!  Freedom for my land!"

Juan stood up resolved
And fought with all his might!
Soon enough, America did return,
And they together defeated their plight.

With Japan's loss, the Great War ended,
Treaties and agreements were made.
Reconstruction and development:
Necessities for the pain to fade.

"My injuries will heal, worry not.
And thank you, friend, for your aid.
But, for now, my people need to stand
And fulfill this promise that I made."

"My people, hear my words,
Let us put our hands together as one.
Should divine winds blow, bend!
Till the end of time, we shall live on!"
