I recently decided it was time to try m y hand at traditional portraits again. It's been a long time I've (successfully) drawn anything traditional that was even remotely realistic; I've grown way too accustomed to using Photoshop. And while that's great, and it's really fast and easy, there's something fulfilling about spending time on a piece of paper....This was drawn with charcoal, so I cannot actually scan it in until I spray it with fixative. This was taken with my iPhone XD; It is also my first piece done with charcoal in possibly 3 years, so please go easy on me!
It's uh, Gerard Way, by the way. Does it look like him? XD; Once again, go easy!!!

I'm planing to switch from that medium to photoshop soon aswell, but you're right - this technique gives so much satisfaction (thou it's so easy to mess up the drawing -.-').

Oh! I'm talking about stuff to spray on the picture to keep it from smudging. Some people use hairspray XD

THANK YOU. I don't really care what he's wearing as long as it's in keeping with "the good old days of Davey," not the modern "let's look like a tacky hipster and yet wear designer clothes" Davey. T_T It's like he's spending as much money as he possibly can to look as bad as he possibly can.

It's sad, really. The more expensive the clothes are, the shittier they look. Which is why I just shop anywhere that has a sale.
I might do a couple more charcoal test runs before I tackle Davey as it'll be like the first real portrait of him I've ever done, and i wanna make it perfect for you :3

Love this piece and the medium. It very much looks like him, and even without scanning thats one hella good turn out for resolution from your phone. If you do anymore in this style I'm excited to see them.

Thanks! Yeah, I was actually surprised at how big the file was when I dragged it onto my computer. I took pics of the step-by-step process as well....wondering if I should post that!
