It's amazing that you can capture such clear-focused shots of animals that move all the time. Wish I could do that. Β  Gorgeous photography. Getting clear pics of bees are the hardest for me. Any tips?

Thank you for such a lovely comment

The best tip I could give you is to stop chasing them and wait for them to come to you. If you spend some time watching how they move you will find where you have the best opportunities to take the best shots.

Last year I planted several plants to attract more bees into my garden. The first of these were lavender plants and whilst they attracted lots of bees, they moved very quickly between each flower and I still haven't taken a decent shot of a bee on them yet.

On the other hand when a bee lands on this flower, it stays a lot longer and therefore gives me a better chance of getting it in focus.

Guess I might have to try harder. We planted stuff just FOR the bugs. And I'm always out in the woods and swamps, with wildflowers all along the way. You never know what you'll find. But I see what you mean about the bees. Mine sit there long enough, but always MOVING! (pollination, it's their job. )
About what time in the morning do you find the dewy insects? It would also help if we HAD butterflies around here. Last year we had almost none. Β  But we had dragonflies up the you-know-what.

Actually your response does give another clue to the aspiring, bug, macro photographer (time of day, get up early!!!!).

Unfortunately I don't take this advice and most of mine are taken in the afternoon, when they are much too lively. If, however, you get up very early most bugs are far too cold to get moving, let alone start flying

Ah. I've read that butterflies need to warm up to above 80 degrees internallyΒ (?) to be able to fly. So I could wait til a frost Β  Β  (poor bug!)
