Description

She was on her feet before she knew what she was doing. “Douglas-“ she rasped, but still much too quiet for him to hear. Soon she was running, running as fast as her new injuries could carry her, towards her heart, her soul, her something. Oh, how long it had been since she’d seen him? It must have only been for a day, maybe two, but it felt like an eternity had passed since the mesa had crumbled beneath them. So long since she had felt the comfort of his back pressed against hers as they slept.

Her friend. Her ally. Her companion. Her teammate. Her something.

“Douglas!” she yelled above the crowd, weaving around cats, limping, catching her breath as pain seared through her but she didn’t care. She could see him, getting closer, his voice getting louder, and then —

Lucreta didn’t try to hide behind false pretenses; not after all she had been through, all that they had been through. She didn’t hold herself back, hide behind a facade, use wit and sarcasm to mask what she was truly feeling — not here, not now. She ran until she felt his fur against hers, something she could call real, something she could hold onto and ground herself with. She felt his heart pounding, the rattle in his lungs, the blood dried to his skin, and for the first time since the start of this god awful Trial she felt safe.

-/////-

Through the golden dusk, she came - turned, saw him, heard him, and took off through the wheat, swerving between cats as if she were borne on an invisible river, always always towards him. Being apart from her felt so much longer than it actually was - even now, moments felt like eons. Douglas squinted against the light-filled haze, trying to keep his eyes on her, as if he would lose her should he look away.

He coughed suddenly, stumbled, pain shooting through his torn foreleg - and then she was there. Her scent wreathed around him, and he was surprised by the deep comfort that settled into his body as his lungs fed it to his nerves, his blood. All at once it felt like somehow, for this moment, everything was okay.

Douglas squeezed his eyes shut, pressing his head fiercely against her neck, and at once the stench of blood and fear registered at last. He held her there for a long moment, breathing shallow, taking what little he could get before he had to deal with reality. Her body was cool, just as he remembered it - but not cold, not fragile, in spite of everything. It held on, as he did, and it was solid, and it felt like coming home.
