Of all the sharks in the sea, though the great white is my favorite, the shortfin mako is to me, the most beautiful. A living torpedo, this shark is not only fast and sleek, but also highly intelligent. They have good memories and fishermen describe these sharks as being vengeful when hooked, waiting for just the right moment to lash out at those they perceive as an enemy. In tests by biologist Craig Thorburn and photographer Mike Bhana, makos proved themselves capable of making decisions that indicate high intellect; when feeding at boats, they feel safe enough not to eye roll, expect to be handled while being offered food, can be briefly restrained without retaliating once they deem a diver unthreatening, and can even be fed by hand. While never able to work with the same sharks twice, Thorburn and Bhana's research shows that makos are highly intelligent, swift and deadly.
