Back in May when I was working on my digital shortfin mako drawing , me managed to work out this sketch of its sister species - the longfin mako (Isurus paucus). Like the shortfin, the longfin is currently classified as endangered (EN) by the IUCN Red List. Unlike I. oxyrinchus, I. paucus was a more prevalent deep-diving species, remaining in mesopelagic depths in the day while ascending to the surface at night. Also unlike shortfins, longfins generally inhabit tropical regions. The most distinguishing features from its sister species are elongated pectoral fins, overall larger size, darker dorsal coloration, and larger eyes in ratio to their body size. A digital color version of this is expected to happen some time later this year, no guarantee when however. Also happy Shark Week to all you shark-lovers!
