Description

“The fact that this creature still exists is remarkable… if only it weren’t so evil tempered or foul smelling.” – Unknown dragon rider from the Archaeological Division upon seeing the carcass of the Wyrm slain by a young Kaine Dragonheart.

A beast that is a living fossil, the Wyrm is as close to a dragon ancestor as one could get. Indeed, despite its lack of legs, it is the closest living relative to the dragons, closer than even the wyvern. However, it has none of the sentience of its kin. It also has no discernable trace of benevolent behavior either.

Vicious, venomous and voracious, the Wyrm is a threat to any and all smaller creatures it encounters. It is also foul smelling, described as being akin to acid fumes mixed with the scent of rotting flesh and festering wounds. Its breath is described as even worse, enough to induce instant nausea and incoordination, even in dragons. If that were not enough, its venom acts like hydrochloric acid, though much stronger, melting and burning whatever the Wyrm bites.

Believed extinct for 10 million years, the wyrm was only known from incomplete skeletons until a 15-year-old Kaine Dragonheart inadvertently stumbled into one’s lair with his dragon Thorinen. Managing to slay the creature through their combined might (a major feat considering they were in their first year of training), they brought the Wyrm’s head for study by scientists and researchers, proving without a doubt that the creature still existed. Subsequent attempts to capture one alive have either had to be abandoned or resulted in the death of the beasts, as their ferocity can cause them to decapitate themselves if caught or result in attacks by the Wyrms that were only stopped by timely use of magic.
