Description   Preview of my artwork for the Places Charity Artbook

This wonderful artbook celebrates all the incredible places on Earth, and all the amazing places we dream of going someday. For my inspirational place, I chose to illustrate Japan's autumn gardens.

I'm very honored to have been invited to participate in this fantastic project! It was both very exciting and quite challenging to capture the many little moments I love about autumn and of the beautiful sights found in traditional Japanese gardens that are so very special to me.

Sae, this looks stunning! I love the atmospheric use of blue in the background, which contrasts with the vibrant reds and oranges of the leaves, as well as complements the lush green of the foliage. From what I can see, the details look absolutely stunning! Especially the subtle colour changes in the rocks and the tree bark. The young lady you've chosen to paint looks like an absolutely charming figure that suits the piece well too <33 I can't wait to see the final piece!

~   Awww, thank you so much for your incredibly wonderful comment, kuri! I tried my best to capture (and visually balance) all the things I dearly love about my chosen place, so I'm happy to hear that the subtleties and details seem to all fit together in the end.

You packed in your picture so many details that even the tree could be a whole picture on its own and it would be awsome.
I really can't wait to see the whole piece!

~  Aww, thank you so much! Haha, yes, there are quite a lot of details in the picture, more than I anticipated. Japanese gardens are always full of hidden views, and every new place you look, you discover a new perspective of the garden. It's a characteristic I dearly love, however the portrait orientation of the drawing wouldn't really allow for it (and it made creating negative space a bit difficult as well). So I had to change my approach to this drawing quite a few times. Haha, I probably ended up with too many details in the end, but I learned many new things about how to create these spaces in future, so I'm happy I discovered a new way to level up my art style.

I was also kinda stuck with the portrait orientation^^ I could have drawn the clouds a lot more higher.
And it's exciting how much everybody gains new experiences with just one drawingXD I learned a lot things about landscapes by doing this!

Ooooo, you too? Haha, yes, portrait proved to be a very unexpected challenge. I thought it would be okay, but then in the middle of coloring, I suddenly realized, ".... ....why isn't this working!?" XD

It's true! You are absolutely correct! Finding ways to overcome the difficulties we encounter in our art provides us with a fantastic experience about what to do and what not to do in our future drawings. This artwork taught me a lot about that, and thanks to this experience, I've learned so many wonderful new things that I can't wait to try out in my next painting.

~  I'm so happy you were able to learn some fantastic new things too, thePingdelf! Let's both work hard toward making even more amazing landscapes!    ~

Yeah! We're gonna kick butts!
Oh, another topic!~ Did you also do still life painting sometimes? It just came into my head, 'cause I work on one right now

How fun! Still life paintings are a fantastic way to discover new painting techniques. I don't really paint them nowadays, but I used to a lot when I painted with acrylics on canvas. All the techniques I learned from painting still life compositions have stayed with me to this very day.

~  I'm sure your still life painting will turn out great!

~  You're very welcome! As for the artbook contest, Yiamme has extended it because many people were asking for a little more time (it's final exam time for many people). I'm sure she will announce the results of the contest as soon as she can.

Ahhh this is so beautifullll... breathtaking, even! ;O; it's so colourful and THOSE DETAILS... it's nice seeing more detailed people like that in your artworks, too. *_* sdhnsadjha

I'm tempted to get the artbook, but I have some questions about the duration of the preorder period and shipping costs... do you know who I would ask, or whether I should just use the Storenvy contact form? Thank you~

Awww, thank you! Haha, yes, drawing people is not my strength, and so I usually draw them smaller. In the full version, she's actually a bit smaller than this, but I zoomed in a little bit for the previews so people can see the details which are normally lost in the posted digital version. But in the full printed version in the artbook, she'll actually look closer to what you see here when you look at the page.

Sure! The best way is to note the group here on DA and ask Yiamme about the specifics of ordering. She's the founder of the group, and a really nice person! She'll be more than happy to answer any questions you have about pre-ordering the artbook.

Oh my goodness Sae, this is such a pretty preview! I'm loving those beautiful autumn colours and your skill in the painterly style really accentuates the textures, it's just so gorgeous I'm excited to see what you upload next~

~  Awww, thank you so much! I tried a lot of new techniques and a different approach to this painting. It was extremely challenging, so I'm glad some of the textures and colors came across in the end. Haha, since I'm rather slow at painting, the next piece I'll probably upload will be the full version of this one.

Aah no worries at all! Experimentation is the best thing;; you get to have fun with it and learn something new about technique and style in the process as well. It really did turn out well in this piece, I'm definitely curious to see the full version when you're allowed to upload it (?)

Ooh that will be good! I'm just curious, what does your artmaking process look like?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sae-midori In reply to rainbownote [2015-05-01 18:39:34 +0000 UTC]

For my art-making process, I almost always start with a traditional pen on paper sketch. The sketch is then scanned into the computer and placed into a Photoshop canvas, where I being coloring under the sketch. No lineart is used at all in my paintings, it's just shapes of color. I continue to color until I no longer need the sketch as a compositional template, at which time I remove the sketch and begin refining the details. And from there, I just keep painting until it painting feels finished.

Oh dear lord if this is just a preview then I'm gonna die from seeing the full piece *^* and if this is what you've done for this Artbook I'm seriously gonna need a resurrection in order to handle what you'll put forth for Rewritten XDomg the colors in this are just too beautiful! You practically used the entire rainbow without overdoing it! It's pretty difficult for someone to use so many colors and not have them collide! The amount of detail and texture you put into your work is astonishingly beautiful!!! (And this is still just a precise wtf XD) Now I'm not just happy Nila recruited you, I'm overly excited XDD OOOOOOOO I can't WAIT to see what you'll do :3 *bounces up and down in anticipation

~ Awww, that's so sweet of you to say, Vydni! Thank you so much for your incredibly lovely comment! //gets phoenix down out to revive Vyndi

Yes, indeed! I really tried hard to level up my colors and my lighting in this piece, all while trying to figure out how to paint a landscape scene in portrait orientation. Haha, all my techniques are geared for landscape orientation, so it was a very unexpected challenge. But I tried my absolute best to make it look spectacular for the book, and to try to convey all the special things I love so much about Japan's autumn gardens.

I will be starting my sketch for Rewritten Artbook very soon! Working on this artpiece actually gave me a new idea for it, so I'll be testing it out in the sketch.

OMG YOURE CERY MUCH WELCOME AND SORRY FOR LATE REPLY IM SO SLOW LOL!!! XXDD THE PHOENIX HAS REVIVED ME THOUGH!!!

Your hard work really pays off and it's very noticeable. I wonder what the entire drawing will look like I guess it's a good choice that we allowed artists to choose landscape or portrait XD

Oh really!? That's great! I wonder what it will be.. *^*

oh yeah.. So I've been trying to play around for the cover of Rewritten and I couldn't place the subtitle anywhere I liked so Nila and I decided that we're gonna make the cover and illustration that fully wraps around the book. It's fully based on scenery. Think of Alice Madness Returns concept art :3
Lol to be honest I was thinking of you when we decided on an illustration. I was like "I wanna try a landscape and focus on the setting rather than the character. That should be interesting". I already did a sketch but I'm changing some things so that the text will be more noticeable. If you want I can send you what I showed Nila in the first place and get your opinion :3
