Description An experimental species I've created. The name means "swift running dogs" which is no mistake! Combining features of canids and those ever enthralling dromaeosaurs ("raptors"), these pack hunters are fast, agile, and powerful. Their long, stiff tail is flexible at the base and tipped with a fan of feathers which they use for balance and maneuvering while running. Their toes are hoof-like, allowing for increased traction while running and climbing. However, the inner toe features a long, sharp claw that aides in gripping prey along with their two elongate teeth. Once one of these dogs manages to latch on good luck getting them to let go.

Their pack structure allows them to take down prey many times their size, but it also provides a rich social life for these dogs. The unique, fleshy shield on their faces not only acts as a wind-breaker for their eyes while running, but can be flushed with or drained of color in order to signal moods. Heightened periods of excitement tend to lead to a brighter shield, while sickness or sadness often lead to a dull shield. They also communicate with their feathers and fur. This is done in much the same manner as a wolf or bird. Feathers and hair upward can indicate excitement or anger, with the ear position often determining which is which.

The example dog up there is Tirrhopi as a Dromeus Dog (I couldn't resist).

I was selling these guys over at WolfHome ([link] ) if you are interested. I was curious about how well they would do. People seemed to like them! They are NOT an open species.

that's a pretty interesting species concept. :3
i really like elaborated designs like this, it shows that you've thought about the featrues you gave them. 8D
it's sad that a lot of ppl add e.g. a feathered crest only for the purpose of having something that makes their character look good. that's really something i find weird because there's nothing that has a real function, even though it's fantasy, i don't really like those stuff. xD
nyah, well done, great concept! ^__^

Thanks! As a biologist I feel the same way as you with fantasy creatures. I like things that look plausible! I spend a lot of time studying anatomy, evolution, and behavior for my job

Great job on this. I favorited it the other day but just now got around to leaving a comment. I love the teeth on it, i can just see one latching on to the neck of a fleeing hypsilophodeer ( or whatever strange hybrid prey exists in its world) and delivering a slashing throat bite in the manner of a saber-toothed cat. the big canines and face shield also give it a cool, slightly mandrill-esque quality as well. The attention to detail paid to the anatomy is excellent overall. Do you do these on the computer? I'd like a drawing program a bit better and more versatile then the MSPaint I use right now, any recommendations?

The Dromeus Dog is a really awesome critter. The design is totally kick-ass and believable, and I -love- how you've drawn the hind-legs.

Great reference sheet too. :>

Oh, these are just fab!

I really adore the fleshy facial shield on these guys. Particularly how its color will vary depending on mood. To be honest, when I first looked at it, I was reminded of a cere, and assumed it would denote the sex of the dog. Silly me!

Are these guys intended for a specific environment? Looking at the slender legs and long ears, I can't help but think they'd be nifty in a desert area. Or maybe the fleshy hooves just make me think of camels. Hooray for association? Hm. Since their hips are similar to dromeasaurs, can they not bend their hind legs very far back? Do they have a super-flexy cheetah spine to compensate? Am I asking too many questions? ... Probably so XD

Once again, super neat critter here XD

SageKorppi In reply to Nashoba-Hostina [2010-07-09 04:20:57 +0000 UTC]

It's a bit like a cere, but no sexual dimorphism ^^

I was thinking arid mountains, a lot like the Rockies and plains...like I tend to, haha. I based the hooves mostly on big horn sheep. And yes! I imagine a super flexible spine like a cheetah, but no limitations on the leg movement like in dromaeosaurs. It's a lot like a dromaeosaur hip, but not exactly alike. I really should do a skeletal!

I love these types of questions! And thanks Nash!!

One more question - what's the boot on the hip?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SageKorppi In reply to WendyLynn [2010-07-08 20:51:45 +0000 UTC]

It's a name for the bit of the hip that projects down and back:

Haha, the Kyoht's illustration was funny! Okay, I know what you're talking about now. So... what the crap's that thing for?

WendyLynn [2010-07-08 20:35:02 +0000 UTC]

I love the fact that you have a biology degree. I've never heard of the high sagittal crest for a more powerful bite. That kind of reminds me of wild pigs, having the shovel skulls and high crests, I guess. What other animal is that from?

My only other question would be that would the shield limit their vision if it's used as a windbreaker? That's what came to mind when I read it.

Interesting that you put hooves on there. I never thought of them as having more traction, but I guess it would be easier to run over hard rocky surfaces with hooves? I dunno.

Thanks for making me think!

SageKorppi In reply to WendyLynn [2010-07-08 20:52:16 +0000 UTC]

I thought about that, but the "shield" isn't all that big. It just breaks up the wind, it doesn't cover the eyes.

WendyLynn In reply to SageKorppi [2010-07-08 23:06:24 +0000 UTC]

Oh, okay, yeah I suppose you would only need a bit to break the wind. Hm!
