Description The Bajkala
by SageSinRiddle

An ancient bred found around Bajkal Lake, also known as Lake
Baikal, the Bajkala is the horse of dreams. Resembling the cross
between a Friesian and a powerful warmblood, this is one breed
that can excel in the harshest of Siberian climates. In the show
ring it excels at the sport of dressage but holds that right amount
of flare for the performance ring.

It wasn’t until just a few years ago that this horse was discovered
and captured for the use of man. So how do people know that it is
ancient? Signs of it were first discoverd over three hundred years
ago but because of the skittish nature, no one ever caught a
glimpse.

Now cared for by staff of Ocean View Equestrian Center, both in
the wild and in civilization, the breed has finally been exposed and
offered to the public as a classic mount or driving horse. Numbers
are low and so the breed must be conserved and protected.

Information on how to acquire one of these horses is listed at the end.

Characteristics and Behavior

A relatively skittish horse, the Bajkala is known to trust
only one human in captivity. They are fiercely loyal and
love the thrill of competition but a firm and experienced
hand is needed. Do not expect to be able to ride one of
these stunning horses the first time you meet them,
especially the more temperamental stalions.

Constantly looking out for danger, this breed is known
for their hyper vigilance and it doesn’t make them a good
mount for events such as show jumping and cross country.
If the proper level of trust is achieved, however, these
horses make wonderful driving horses, dressage horses or
even trail horses.

Build and Conformation

Built like a classic Belgian Warmblood, the Bajkala
has the feel of a lightly built Friesian. Standing at
around 18 hands (182.9 cm) for the breed
standard, 17 hands (172.7 cm) for the mare, this
large breed features a well muscled neck and
feathered legs. They survived freezing Siberian
winters, they are most certainly built like it.

A classic show look requires that the forelock be
kept long and the mane cut into a mohawk, very
much resembling the look of a Zebra. The tail
should be kept long, and when properly taken care
of, have the slightest hint of a wave.

Disciplines:

Common:
Dressage
Driving
Uncommon:
Trail
Endurance
Note:
Crossbreds may be used in other events except for racing.

Markings:

Facial:
All Bajkalas must have white markings on their face. All types of markings are accepted here.
Body:
No pure bred Bajkalas may have markings on their body except those required by the breed standards.
Legs:
All Bajkalas have sabino-marked legs. No exceptions. Markings must go to at least the knee.

REQUIRED:

  • The Ears:
  • All Bajkalas have white-rimmed ears. If they don't have it, they aren't pure or don't meet the breed standard. They cannot be registered with the studbook.

  • The Dorsel Stripe:
  • Crossbred or pure bred, Bajkalas have a "white" dorsel stripe. They are not considered by the studbook without it. No exceptions.

  • The Eyes:
  • All pure bred Bajkalas have either blue or silver eyes. Only crossbreds may have other colors.

  • The Sabino Gene:
  • All Bajkalas have sabino-marked legs. They may not have sabino spotting or other markings on the body but legs must be covered to at least the knee. Crossbreds are excempt from this rule.

  • The "Flame" Belly:
  • No Bajkala, pure or crossed, may be without this striking feature. Its pattern is different on every horse but it is always there and it always resembles flames.

All dilution and silver genes
Uncommon:
Liver Chestnut
Flaxen Chestnut
Banned: (Not allowed except in Crosses)

Breeding

This section is currently closed and the only way to receive a Bajkala is through Ocean View Equestrian Center but the standards are listed below for future reference.

If you wish to have a crossbred Bajkala, please consider why you don't want a pure bred, be it for a more (or less) refined conformation or more choice in disciplines.

Bajkalas may be bred to the following:

Warmbloods
Friesians

They may not be bred to:

Thoroughbreds
Arabians
Ponies (Size difference can be an issue and danger during foaling or breeding)

Obtaining a Bajkala

In order to receive one of these fantastic horses, potential owners must write a letter to Ocean View Equestrian Center outlining what they want. Once the letter is accepted, staff will travel out and bring back these wild creatures.

After the designs are drawn, the potential owner must draw a picture of their person "working with" the horse. This can include lunging, being with the horse in the indoor riding arena or trying to ride. Please remember that these horses will only bond to one person. Without this drawing, the horse will not be given to the potential owner.

People who create their own Bajkalas without permission will not be placed in the official studbook and thus ignored. This breed is dear to my heart and I do not want to see it tossed around like it means nothing.

billygoatsgruff [2011-05-10 18:03:52 +0000 UTC]

I don't quite make sense of how bay can be common and black be banned?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SageSinRiddle In reply to billygoatsgruff [2011-05-10 20:19:59 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't really need to make sense This breed isn't based on anything that is deemed realistic and I didn't want it to be associated with Friesians if I allowed black. Also, the color is listed as banned, not impossible. ^^

It's like someone who owns a white German Shepherd. The color is possible but under the breed standards of the AKC, it is listed by means of " A white dog must be disqualified."

If one of these horses is a crossbred, it may be black because it is not considered pure and does not meet breed standards automatically.

BWP as base for the build, amazing my homebreed and Friesian in one horse ... just amazing
I so want one ... but so many horses already hmm, I was planning to sell some and make changes in my stable again. It's getting over my head a little bit

Though, you say that we need to draw a picture were our staff is riding the horse then, but in the breedsheet you say it's unliky they can ride the horse the first time they see it XD
Sooo ... can it be a more wildride then to?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SageSinRiddle In reply to SilmesDragonStable [2011-05-10 09:03:52 +0000 UTC]

Yea, it should be technically just "working with" the horse to see if there's a bond. Riding can be a part of that but it isn't required.

It's like writing a letter for any other of the unique breeds people have created on HARPG. You have to state what you're looking for, why you think it'd be good for your farm, etc ^^
