Description How much are gender roles defined by objects? Can one woman be more of a woman than another by possessing things like purses, shoes or make-up? This project is about the cultural artifacts and ideas that I refuse to buy into. None of the accessories pictured belong to me.

Selected image from "My Lack of Femininity." Project of 17 images completed May 9, 2006. Inspired by the work of Jane Calvin.

This image was the first ones that I shot for this project. I love how the entire project turned out. Printed 13x19, it's the most professional project I've done so far. I am still blown away by my results. Usually I have grand ideas and they turn out looking almost as good as I envisioned. This entire project turned out exactly how I wanted it to; in some photographs, it turned out even better than I had originally envisioned.

Also, I am in love with coloured lights and black backgrounds. These images remind me of my concert photography for that reason.

this is my favorite of the ones you've posted so far - the lighting is nicely done and i really dig the composition. i'm sure the resemblance to a heart is quite intentional and it lends the image, even with it's "lack of femininity", a certain visceral passion. the texture of the purse and the lighting soften/transmutes the effect to a certain sophisticated sensuality - a la the femme fatale in a film noir

it might be nice to crop in a little closer from the left hand corner, but then you'd lose some contrasting texture ... perhaps a frame to center the attention a little more ?

Actually, most other people who saw this photo didn't think "heart." Many of them thought vagina. A few thought flower (which is a common euphamism for that bit of anatomy). T be honest, I'm not sure if it was intentional or not. I definitely decided to hang the purse in that exact way. It said something to me, but at the time I didn't know what. After getting feedback from people who thought it was female anatomy, I thought to myself, "You know, that works really well with what I'm saying in this project." I like your interpretation too. So far, everything people have seen in that purse has added to the meaning of this series.

This image was more lo-res than the rest of them, so I was literally stretching it by trying to get a 13x19 out of this. I wanted that contrasting texture in there and some negative space around the main purse to keep in the style of the other images. As for a frame, these all printed out with that .125" margain that printers give things.
