~ PERSONALS ~
Personality:
+Calm / +Thoughtful / +Rational / +Kind
With years of experience under his belt, Kyul has learned to cultivate and control his natural propensity towards anger. As such, he's now a rather calm individual that will take quite a bit to be rankled by. This calmness is also bolstered by his tendency to be ruled by logic rather than emotion. He deals with problems diplomatically and very rarely lets true emotion dictate his actions, although in his early youth the reverse was true.
Among his good points, Kyul can also be quite thoughtful and kind. Due to his rationality, he has subscribed to a more nihilistic school of thought, and if in the end nothing matters, why not be kind to each other? As such, he's not one to shy away from doing small acts of kindness if it may help others around him, even if he may not go particularly far out of his way, and Kyul believes his honesty is a form of kindness not many people may understand. He doesn't point out things against social etiquette or when uncalled for, but he refuses to be the ally who blindly supports without offering constructive criticism. At the end of the day, he believes one's general well being is more crucial than short term goals of satisfying what one impulsively wants in the moment.
With that being said, Kyul is a very good person to talk to when looking to resolve personal issues or overcome problems of character. He will challenge those who speak to him and ask questions to break down their more problematic thought patterns, but in certain cases he may not give the emotional coddling certain others need.
-Secretive / -Mistrusting / -Emotionally Detached / -Abrasive
On the flip side, Kyul uses perception and logic to offer his insights. When it comes to himself, he is infinitely secretive and guarded. Because of the pain sustained in his past, he finds it more prudent to keep his weaknesses to himself and would rather feel a flat line emotion rather than experiencing the highs of true joy or the lows of deep despair. He speaks little of himself, but focuses instead on the others around him. Even then, he minimizes contact with others as much as possible, which further feeds into his want to stay emotionally detached.
On a similar vein, Kyul can occasionally be quite abrasive. Although he may have kind intentions, his rationality and love for logic may present him as someone callous. He has a very set idea of what someone needs and will have no qualms with disregarding what they might want, and if not heeded to he may become quite closed off. In this manner, one may say he's even a little bit arrogant.
History:
[Tl;dr: Sad Sasuke BG with murdered witch parents, went on a vengeful rampage killing humans. Witch mentor was like nah son, stop that fam, and bound him to Aradia. There's a generic tragic love story in there somewhere and Kyul calms the fuck down because of the vessel that was killed.]
Born in an unremarkable village on the outskirts of Geneva, Kyul's early life was largely typical as far as fairy tales went. His parents were ousted as witches and burned at the stake despite their roles as healers and pharmacists, and given his young age he was simply exiled. Too young to learn how to hide his magical affinity well, he was exiled from village to village until a passing witch took him under her wing.
With her tutelage, Kyul began to learn how to tame his abilities and learn more complex spells. Eventually, when he seemed to have learned enough to need one, the witch taught him the necessity of a vessel in bolstering one's magic. Obsessed with the potential of his abilities and young enough to let it get to his head, he deceived her trust once he made a pact with a human vessel, and after he had cultivated enough power he razed down the village that his parents had once tried to help. He'd have massacred a couple more if his tutor hadn't intervened and, due to his reckless bid for power, the vessel in his care went mad.
For a time he was put under tight watch. Still young and thinking of Kyul as her own son, the witch didn't hand him over to pay for his crimes. Instead, she harboured him and spoke with him, doing her best to sway the vengeful anger that had been hidden so well before. On his part, he played along. He knew how to be docile and how to appease her sense of justice, and when enough years had passed, she finally set him free.
It didn't take long for him to return to his old ways. This time, however, he wasn't as brazen. He was more careful with his vessel-- or vessels, as they were more spread out this time-- and the murders he committed were harder to trace back to one source. But over time, it began to become apparent that the urban legend spread among the people was not just an urban legend, and on a hunch the witch began to investigate.
In order to capture Kyul this time, it was by necessity that the witch destroyed his vessels. Among them was a boy Kyul had particular affinity and love for, whose kindness had worked insidiously for years to sway him once more towards the light. Before facing off with his mentor, their relationship had been steadily deteriorating, as the vessel himself could not condone the many lives he'd assisted in taking, and though begging and pleading for a change Kyul remained unmoved. It was a complicated relationship, but nonetheless the vessel remained loyal to the end, and the loss was enough to snap Kyul out of his mindless hatred of all things human. He spiraled into deep seated apathy, and even when his mentor bound him to Aradia he offered no fight. Instead, he mourned for a century, until at last he could no longer stand to look at the pathetic existence he'd become.
From there, he retraced his roots to begin atoning for his sins-- to pay respects to the human he loved. He delved into apothecary and abandoned the very roots of his magic, instead focusing on the side of light. He looked to nature for ways to heal, and occasionally he passed this knowledge on in the form of helping those who came upon the little cabin he was caged in. Rather than see it as a punishment, he made peace with his little plot of the woods near the sanctuary of light witches, and over time the rumors about him changed. They say there's a hermit witch that can be found only if one needed him-- a small cabin in the woods and a man who kept no company, but will offer a place to see to your troubles for just one night. It's a haven within a haven; a quiet shrine of healing hidden beneath the dappled shade of towering trees, and it was open to any who needed a reprieve from life's stresses.
~ EXTRAS ~
Facts:
- Kyul is essentially kept prisoner in his cabin and physically cannot leave the forest area of Aradia unless given special permission.
- He has refused to take on a vessel ever since the loss of his favourite, and as such his magic is quite weak.
- He's usually seen floating on his broomstick and doesn't wear shoes because of this. The maximum height he can float is 10 feet and he can't fly super fast. It's literally just floating.
- While he has extensive knowledge of dark magic, he now knows them only in theory. Along with being kept under house arrest, there's a bind on him that makes it impossible for him to access most forms of dark magic.
- It's possible for him to break these binds but he can't do it on his own.
- Essentially he's starting his magical studies again from ground 0 after switching affinities.
