you have no idea. That's one of my pasture fields out back.Β  Unfortunately, the second horse, Spydah (twerp brother to Brandy), we lost a few years ago, but Brandy (the horse up front), she's my girl.Β  32 years old this year.Β  I've had her since I was six

it's ok.Β  It was a few years ago, now. And, yes, Brandy is definitely part of the family.Β  She was my 6th birthday present, and she was born in my barn. Mum owned both her mother and father.Β  She wasn't born until July and my birthday is in February - gotta tell you, it was the longest wait ever!!

It is. I've grown up with them as my family owns and operates an English riding stable. Brandy (in this picture) was my sixth birthday present. I still have my princess. In fact she's out snoozing in the barn right now!

I know that you requested a critique. I do not have a premium account, so I could not click the 'write a critique' button and leave one properly.
But, I do have some things to say about this photo. I have taught Art, am a professional artist and have been taking photos since I was 13 (32 years)...
First, I have to say that the depth of field is great in this shot. You have shown that the world is bigger than just the foreground image.
Second, I like the fact that the subjects are niether backlit nor lit directly from the front. This gives the subjects more depth and texture.
Also, in my opinion, you framed the subjects fairly well. My photography teacher (long ago) made us all remember the 1/3 rule; Things in a photo should be split in thirds. This means that if it is landscape, the picture should capture 1/3 land and 2/3 sky, for example. This is just about 2/3rds horse.
The greatest thing about this picture is that it tells a story. If I had not read your description, I still would have thought that the horse in the back ground was following the one in the fore ground, for some reason. Now that I have read your description, it adds a humorous quality to the photo. That is a great way to make it memorable.
~Just my two cents. Hope it helps.

Well, I thank you very much for your two cents. They have been most helpful. I have not had any photography training as mine has been more with traditional art, but I do know the rule of thirds. Having said all of that, I was just pleased the pic turned out at all! I love my horses to death, but helping out with a decent composition can sometimes be most trying! Regardless, I am glad that you liked it, and your opinion is always most welcomed.

It was a great shot especially when we keep in mind that animals don't co-operate for the sake of art...only for curiosity's sake or food (like my dog), etc.

Thank you. I love your work.

Yes, food wins every time, no?

Thank you so much for the compliments. I went through your gallery, and you have some amazing work there! And such variety in theme and medium. It's really nice to find an artist that isn't pigeon-holed into just one thing.

It's okay, but I do wish you the best in life, because you are going places. Places where even hand-drawn pictures won't describe it. You'll have to draw it with your heart.
