That's a quote from the first Felicity book. And yes, she said it to Ben. Those books play into my shippy tendencies so easily. Seriously, Ben and Felicity was literally my first OTP. I shipped them before I knew what shipping was. I think mostly anyone that reads those books knows that those two wound up married when they were older

I liked that quote because even though it wound up playing into the Penny subplot, I think it would come to mean something very different when Lissie got older (as well as Ben's line at the end of the first book: "She knows you love her so much you let her go free. You gave her what she needed most—her independence.")

I am writing a fanfic that will go with this art, but I think it makes sense even by itself. We all know that Ben is going to have to leave sooner or later, because he wants to fight in the war. Felicity won't be happy to see him go, but she'll know he needs to. And here, he promises that he'll come back to her.

P.S. history also plays into Ben/Lissie shippers' hands so easily. Felicity would have been sixteen when Washington's soldiers arrived in Williamsburg before the battle of Yorktown. Something for you all to mull over
