NOTE: The blonde and Shiba Kaien are not part of the recruits. As the lieutenant, it is Kaien's job to welcome the division's recruits. This is roughly ninety or so years ago, so Kaien's only been a lieutenant for maybe ten years at most. Takashiro Yumiko (the blonde) is the oldest in the thirteenth division with the exception of Ukitake Joshiro, the captain, and has gone through this process many times - that's why she's here.

These three are the 13th's most promising recruits - on the left with the red hair is Senkatsu Taiki. In the middle is Kuchiki Rukia, whom you know. The one all the way to the left is Sasasyaku Toki. Taiki and Toki are NOT related in any way.

ability zainin does not have a specific spirit embodiment. it is one of the very, very few zanpaku-to who has had multiple masters - it is not born with a shinigami nor does it die with its shinigami. zainin is made of six spiritual beasts who can take on slightly human forms. these are derivations of the past masters. how zainin works is that when one master dies, one of the six spirits that served will leave the sword and rejoin the reincarnation cycle and the dead master will reform into the new sixth spirit of zainin. in this way, since zainin cannot manifest with any shinigami, the six beasts choose their next master - they found taiki in his freshman year at the spiritual arts academy. he was able to use shikai by midyear.

ability masatsu is an electricity-based zanpaku-to that, using a bit of reiatsu, will convert any friction into even more reiatsu. toki's zanpaku-to is more like a melee-sword than anything, as she basically uses this extra reiatsu to create devastating blows. her blade is extremely long, so long that it drags along the ground when she walks. masatsu's special ability is that even in the sealed state, as long as the sword is in its sheath, it will convert friction into reiatsu, which is stored in the sheath instead, battle-ready, which is why masatsu must be long enough to drag along the ground, to create friction.

romance toki was already attached to ayasegawa yumichika and madarame ikkaku when she was a freshman in the spiritual arts academy, and often picked fights to get her noticed by the two. she continues to spar with them after graduation, mostly ikkaku, often visiting the eleventh's trainin grounds. most thought she had a crush on ikkaku, but it was actually on yumichika. along the way she realized yumichika's heart lay elsewhere. she was miserable and heartbroken for a good time until somebody else patched up her heart and stole it at the same time masatsu also is especially attached to someone: kazeshini.
