Photoshop! And sometimes a pencil to sketch first. ;p

Wow! Really nice! Could you take a request from me? Could you make a picture of a Pikachu vs a Pikachu?

Originally, in my story, (it's obviously WiP at the moment) my Totodile partern Joseph was going to face a Grovyle as a 2nd mini-boss. but after seeing this, the Grovyle would be pretty fast, so I think that it's to early to be a 2nd mini-boss.

You're a pro at the Sugimori-style shading technique. I have to say, though, that the outlining technique doesn't seem to work as well with the trees for some reason. Maybe because it doesn't match the texture on the bark. Ah well, it's a small problem with a great picture. Keep up the good work!

Saital In reply to RisingSunfish [2010-06-07 09:52:29 +0000 UTC]
I kind of see what you mean. I suppose the problem could be alleviated by either shading the areas indicated by the inner lines more clearly, or by getting rid of the inner lineart all together and using the shading to show definition.

I think the background would do fine without any lineart at all. Backgrounds generally are drawn without outlines.

Thanks for the comment!
Yeah experimentation is very much part of the process. Sometimes it turns out amazing, and sometimes not so much. xD
I'm also very fond of this background. Usually in my digital work I try to find ways not to have to draw one, so I felt that I actually needed to draw a BG for once. I guess part of the issue is that I don't know whether I want the background to be roughly a simple as my characters, or if I want them to appear more painted and realistic. Obviously the latter is more difficult to achieve, but I think that the end result looks a lot better if you put in the work.

You're welcome!
I agree. I'm not one to really ever draw backgrounds though (I have that same problem--simple vs. realistic--which, though I hate to admit, just leads me to avoid them all together). XD; There's very little that I know about photoshop, so when I start working on a project (even as something as simple as a sticker or a button) I always end up learning something that I didn't know before, so there's a lot of experimentation that goes on. But I think that's the fun part, even if some effects are difficult to achieve. :3

Yeah Breloom is awesome. Spore + Substitute + Focus Punch = win.
And I agree he is pretty hard to draw. His legs drive me insane. Really what happens is, whenever I find something cool I want to draw, I usually end up dooding it a BAZILLION times in my sketchbook before I even attempt to do a full-version for digitizing. So what you see here is a product of about one or two weeks practice. :]

me too. i hate it when you really can draw is like 11pm and then when you want to draw, your hand wont do shit.

Saital In reply to maddytheskymin [2010-05-20 23:05:33 +0000 UTC]
Yup. Inspiration always comes at late night for me. :/
And also, I have to wear the sleeve of a sweatshirt over my drawing arm so I can draw smooth lines (like Grovyle's leaves here), otherwise my skin catches against the tablet surface. It's kind of annoying having to resort to this because it get's pretty hot. ><

lol UR SPIDERMAN.
that's weird. to draw straight lines, i usually put my arm on an angle.

Saital In reply to maddytheskymin [2010-05-21 22:08:06 +0000 UTC]
lol IM NOT
Well it's not so much for straight lines. It's for when I want to draw long, smooth, flowing curves. For that I need the surface to be smooth, and even then it takes a couple tries to get the line perfect.

Thanks for the kind words. ^^
I've been seriously considering commissions, but when you consider how long it took me to get this piece out the door, I frankly don't know how successful I'd be if I were commissioned. And plus, I don't really know how often I can create pieces of this quality. xP
I believe that once I get into college, I'll have more time and more reason (moneys...) to start commissioning.

latyle In reply to Saital [2010-05-14 00:02:10 +0000 UTC]
If I did get you to commission, I wouldn't expect something of this quality, really just your line art alone is amazing, the depth of color in it just adds more beauty to something already beautiful.
I'd give you 5 aussie dollars to do something rough and not something amazingly detailed like this, maybe just a pose of a poke or something, that's how much I like your work with line art, I actually never participate in commisions because I feel I shouldn't have to pay for someone to make me a good grovyle, or latios or a drawing of my own pokesona, but you are so good that I feel that if you were ever to do anything for me, it'd be worth paying for in digital cash.

Saital In reply to latyle [2010-05-14 00:25:39 +0000 UTC]
Well that's definitely saying something. Anyway, early this coming summer I think my workload will decrease significantly (In fact, now that AP tests are over, it's decreased a lot already.) so I should be able to do cheap commissions like you mentioned.
So hopefully this June I can set aside more time to work more on art and get some commissions done, and play less Battlefield: Bad Company 2.... :x

Thanks. ^^ Grovyle is pretty cool, and Breloom is underrated. So it's cool to see them together.
Haha, I didn't even notice that part. xD Yeah, I guess it does help emphasize their faces when placed in front of the shadowed trees. Hurray for unintentional ingenuity!

Haha, points for you! I was actually semi-attempting Sugimori-style shading in this picture. I mean, it does hint at his style I guess, but this is still a little messy in places.
I guess I'm most proud of Grovyle's leaves.
