A perpetual smile on his face and a bit of a bouncy gait: He comes and goes with a certain air of... je ne sais quoi around him. To strangers, the ever so charming Valérie appears to be full of zest for life.
Be it assisting the elderly or simply giving up his seat for pregnant ladies, he is always eager to be the perfect gentleman and has yet to appear anything but humble about it.
Needless to say, there are two sides of the same coin.

For in reality, Valérie's true self has little in common with what he presents to the world. Cunning, self-centred and with a sprinkle of very bad humour, the young male knows very well how he wants to be perceived.
Alienated by his own actions and intelligence, he is forever searching for a place where he belongs yet can't be quite honest with himself either.
Loyalty is not his forte but those who may manage to pierce through his lies and get to know and accept the real him, may be in for a surprise...

Smoke. Noise. Wide eyes. And then... limelight and applause. A bow.

The show is over.

It started with the magician on television. Next was a card trick during a birthday celebration. And the final curtain fell after stumbling across a book about illusions, deception and sleight of hand.
Maybe his father could have prevented the birth of a pathological liar if only he hadn't been occupied with having to juggle working hard at his job and raising his two young sons all by himself. On the other hand, it was probably his father's unconditional love and his goal to make sure his kids were provided with everything they needed that neither Valérie nor his younger brother ended up as utter sociopaths.
Instead of torturing poor animals, the older child focused on playing piano or violin or learned to be fluent in languages.

Yet... with the world as his stage, Valérie also began to spin his web of lies from a fairly young age. Be it to get away with something or to make sure his peers perceived him in a favourable light, he would let the sweetest words leave his lips – without truly meaning a single one of them. Bonding with them was never a priority. They just needed to revere him.

During this time, another one of his traits became very apparent as well. Unlike his average father, it appeared like the young Valérie was gifted with high intelligence. Going to school turned into a bore within no time and it wasn't until teachers suggested getting him tested that his father found out he was raising a little genius. Two difficult years followed due to Valérie starting to become quite haughty as he polished various skills rather than making friends who he still deemed to be beneath him. He finished school prematurely, entered University and was still not able to get along with the older students when the fall of grace brought him back to reality:
Apparently, he was not the only genius in his family.

In fact, his younger, introverted brother who fancied the life of a shut-in, turned out to be a genius as well, even surpassing his sibling. A genius smarter than a genius. It shattered Valérie's world.
Humble and disconnected from everyone around him, he became a doctor with a penchant for toxicology at the young age of eighteen. Yet it had lost its appeal. He wasn't the protagonist, the magician. He was merely an assistant. The grandeur was gone as was his interest: All in all, he didn't want to work in this profession and the only thing he had gained (besides a fancy title he didn't care much about) was a dangerous interest in poisons.

With two friendless, young PhDs at home and neither of them willing to leave their sanctuary, poor dear father had little hope for their futures. The salvation, the very solution for his two problems, came in form of a letter. After a minor accident involving a very stubborn milktank and a footstool, Valérie's grandfather ended in the hospital with a broken leg and was thus rendered unable to take care of his ranch. Within no time, belongings were packed and jobs were quit so that the family of three could move to the peaceful Raccolto. Surely, helping out on a ranch would teach the boys something new and the foreign surroundings would improve their friendless life. A new start for all of them. Plus, taking care of a few animals... how hard could that be if an old man was capable of it...

Unfortunately, it took them only two weeks to realise:
1. They had no idea of how to run a ranch (grandpa was less than happy to see the state of his beloved ranch after his return)
2. It was harder than they had imagined.
3. Being a genius did by no means include all fields of expertise...
4. Grandpa can actually be really mean. Like... seriously!

Not willing to back down, the family is willing to stay though. And who knows, maybe the friendly locals may be able to teach Valérie a thing or two about ranching (or friendship)...

Valérie shows to be able to play at least the piano and violin though he claims to be also good with the guitar – he does play regularly. His singing is quite good as well.

Multilingual: With his paternal family being French and his maternal family Irish, Valérie grew up in a bilingual household. He is currently learning Welsh to talk to his best (any only) friend.

Anti-Talents:

Gaming: Having never spared a moment of time with video games, he absolutely can't win a video game for the life of him.

Crafts: He made an ashtray from clay once. It scared half the class to death while the other half started to cry uncontrollably. He is bad as anything that requires him to create something (sewing, pottery, etc.).

Animal care: Most animals hate him. Maybe they can see right through him, maybe they just think he looks like a dork. It makes working on a ranch so much harder. The feeling is slowly becoming mutual.
