Chapter One the test
Allie
Today because I am sixteen, I will take the test. The test that will help deiced my future, my place in world. There are five factions; these five where formed after a great war. The war that destroyed the world; so in response our founders built the wall to protect us from whatever is out there beyond the wall. Then after the wall they separated us from into the five the factions. Candor the honest; they tell the truth even when you don’t want them to. Their faction colors are black and white because that is how they see the truth and most people hate them because they tell the truth that much. Abnegation the selfless they live a simple life, wear gray, one mirror in their whole house which almost never look at for too long, they are the civil leaders and they even feed the factionless the ones who don’t belong in any faction for many reasons. Erudite the intelligent, they are the brains of factions I guess you would say. They discover new things and make most if not all of the technology in the city. Dauntless the brave, they are the police our protectors. Some people say the Dauntless are crazy because of their dare devil attitude wearing their red and black, but I see them as free people proving that “fear” and “imposable” are words they don’t know. Finally my fraction Amity the peaceful; which we are because we farm the land always have a big smile on our faces. We ride, drive, and take care of horses; we give food to the factions in our red and yellow sometimes green clothes, my brother Jake is happiest and most peaceful than me. Jake never gets upset as helps in all the chores as I do but not like him. I and he are sixteen so we take the test, from what I have learned in school; when a child or teen of any faction becomes fifth-teen or sixteen they have to take the test; because by that time you are an adult a member of society. I am afraid of what the test might say I’m not Amity; that I have to leave my family; but I am even more afraid that it might tell me to stay. But now as I stand before one of the mirrors in my home I just stare at myself as my mother cuts my hair as I look in the mirror watching myself as she cuts my long ginger brown hair. She brushes it out; putting it in a brad at the bottom of my hair leaving the rest alone. As I look in the mirror I see my deep spring green eye sparkle like the stars I watch on weekends. When my mom is done she stands in front of me with a soft warm smile.
“Are you nervous?”
“No. Where you…when you were going to take the test?”
“No…I was terrified.” We laugh little.
“Not worry, you do great Allie; just have faith. Now come on its time to go.” She says kissing me on my forehead as I grab my book-bag and walk with my older brother Jake. As we walk I am nervous the test will say I have to leave Amity; that I have to leave my family, but I am even more nervous that it will tell me to stay. We walk to school as I getting more nervous by the minute which Jake notices.
“Allie, don’t worry so much. Trust the test, and everything will go fine.”
“Easy for you to say Jake. You’re not the one get nervous because you are afraid of what the test will say.”
“That’s true.”
“What are you becoming Candor now?” I try to joke as he laughs little.
“Are you kidding? Heh, and now I know why they wonder why the other factions hate them.” He says as we laugh. We wait outside in line with people from other factions. The school has five doors each one is for each faction. Now I wonder as I look at the symbols of each faction. “Am I intelligent? Am I selfless? Am I honest? Am I peaceful?” I wonder these questions as the Dauntless arrive. I watch them jump off the moving and see them hit the ground running to where they are to enter the school and I wonder my last question. “Or am I brave?” I walk into the school as Jake goes to math and I go to history class. I like the fact because of the test the classes are cut short. I sit and listen to the teacher talk about the factions.
“About two hundred years after the war that destroyed the world ago our founders built the wall and divided us into five factions. Now when you take the test today…that will help you make your decide what faction you’ll chose at the choosing ceremony tomorrow. I wish you the best of luck with test. In the hopes that you make the right choice whether you leave your faction or you stay. And remember Faction before Blood.” She says as she starts to explain each faction to us so we get a better understanding of them; but the “Faction before Blood” I hate that part because to me blood is stronger than faction. I leave when the bell rings and go to lunch after the two hour history class and I sit with Jake as people are called to take the test. I am so nervous I can’t eat; I look around at all the factions sitting down talking about test and other things relative to their faction. I see new faces in the dauntless faction. At least twelve new faces and I can tell because I have never seen them before because I always watch the dauntless kids listening to what they talk about if I decide to join their faction I would know what to say in a conversation. Each one looks dauntless but they seem to be very different than dauntless. As I watch each one get called up.
“Jake Sue.” His name is called as he gets up and heads to the door where he is to take the test.
“Allie Sue.” My name is called. I stand up and walk out the door as I enter the room. I see a dauntless woman as I sit on the chair. She has purple hair and light green eyes that shine in the light.
“Hello my name is Allie. It is nice to meet you.” I say kindly as she looks at me and smiles.
“My name is Saori. I have never met someone from Amity before. And don’t worry about the test because most people get the faction there from.” She says while she does something on the computer as I see her tattoo of a winged horse running on her arm.
“Not to rude but if you don’t mind me asking what the winged horse on your arm is.” I ask as she looks at me.
“It is called a Pegasus. I got it because to me it is a symbol of hope and light.”
“Where you afraid of losing hope and where afraid of the dark?”
“Yes I was.” She says as she gives me a class with some serum in it.
“What is this?”
“Bottoms up.” She answers as I drink it and lay down closing my eyes. I open my eyes to see I am in some room with a girl and there are mirrors very where.
“Chose.” She says as there is meat and knives on a small table behind me as I turn to see them.
“I don’t understand, what am I supposed to do with these?”
“Chose before it’s too late.” She says as dog comes and the meat and knives are gone. The dog barks at me and charges as I remember that dogs sense fear. So I just drop to my knees closing my eyes expecting the dog to end my life. But then I hear wining as I open my eyes and the dog is puppy now. I pet it as it plays in my hands.
“Puppy!” A girl shouts all of a sudden as I turn to see she is from Amity because of the red and yellow clothes; but the dog growls and looks like the big dog that I thought as going to kill as runs at the girl. I run after it and I land on top of it as I wake back in the room with Saori who is getting me up and typing hurriedly on the computer.
“I am sending you home early. If people ask tell them the serum made you sick so you were sent home early.” She says.
“What about the test?! W-What were my results?” I ask worried.
“Erudite, Dauntless, Abnegation, and Amity. In other words you test results were inconclusive.”
“But the test w-,”
“The test didn’t work on you. So I manually entered Amity as your result. So at the choosing ceremony tomorrow chose the faction that you feel is safest because your life depends on it Allie.” She cuts me off.
“What does this mean?” I ask afraid.
“You’re Divergent Allie. Tell no one and I won’t either because if they find out they’ll kill you. But you must be careful; come on you’ll leave through the back.” She says and pushes me through the door slamming it behind me. I start to tear up and walk home. I walk through the factionless side of the city which is a short cut to the Amity farms. When I get home I go straight home as I start making diner. I as cut up the carrots; Jake and the other Amity kids come talking, laughing and enjoying the scent of the farms’ flowers. Jake opens the door as I start putting the carrots in the soup.
“Allie you okay; what happen to you today?”
“Yeah, just that the serum made me sick so they sent me home early.”
“What were you test results?”
“What were yours?” I ask as he smiles and he helps me cook. By the time our parents get home as Jake is setting the table. We sit down to eat as my parents talk about what happen today as I just stare at my food as I eat.
“So today while I was passing out bags of food to the other factions; I heard that one of kids at the school got sick form the serum after their test.” Dad says as mom as concerned look.
“Well I hope the poor thing is okay and hopefully he or she wasn’t someone from Abnegation.” She says.
“Mom what do you mean you’re hoping the kid wasn’t from Abnegation?” I ask.
“Erudite has been attacking Abnegation’s leader Marcus. Saying that he beat his own son and cause his son to leave and that they; Erudite should because the city leader faction.”
“It that true? Marcus hurting his son?”
“I don’t know but I doubt it because Marcus is selfless so it can’t be true but then again… it wouldn’t be the first time a member of a faction has done something against what their faction stands for.” She says as I feel bad for Abnegation because they do a lot for the people of the city. We continue to eat as I look at myself with the spoon and back to eating. When we’re done mom washes the dishes as me, Jake, and dad unset the table. I realized just now that this night may be my last night here with all of them.
“Allie, Jake. I just want the both of you to remember that no matter what happens tomorrow at the choosing ceremony, I and your mom love you both.” Dad says as we share one final hug of all four of us. As me and Jake head to our bed he stops me.
“Allie tomorrow, not only should we think of what our family wants but we should think of want we want.” He says as I nod in agreement. I watch him enter his room and I see a small stack of books at the end of his bed sticking out a little. I get a feeling of what faction he’ll be joining. So may be all these years have been an act so he could join Erudite. But one thing I hope he doesn’t do is attack Abnegation. As I enter my room I pack up my knives because I have been self-training myself to be dauntless. I have practice climbing trees which I have pretended to be the things that the dauntless would climb. So at the choosing ceremony I should be ready if I chose that faction which I am going to. I get dressed into my pajamas and fall sleep after I hit the bed.
