my thoughts about these scenes: If it's crap, Winry shot Scar.

My only thoughts in this scene:
I will admit, despite my first annoyances, I thought FMA was a little progressiveβ¦until I saw this scene. Instead of being strong and confronting him in a brave manner, she started crying, sunk to her knees, looking pathetic and weak, despite the fact that she picked up a gun and contemplated shooting him! In addition, she does this in front of complete strangers as well as the Elrics. If one wants to be a weak, stereotypical insult to the female gender, than one should do that in the privacy of ones bedroom!
To make this even worse, the boy (Edward) had to jump in front of the girl (Winry) to protect her. The boy had to get the girl to put the gun down. The boy whom had to comfort the girl while she cried her little heart out like a baby! The girl had to be left in the protection of the Military, as if she could not protect herself!
How could Arakawa-sensei have wrote and drawn this? How could she have made her own still-discriminated gender be so pathetic? I hate, hate, hate (I am beginning to sound like Kefka) this type of scene in fiction! They are so sexist it is almost unbelievable! The female character would be crying and sobbing, usually falling feebly to her knees or into her friend/lover's arms, crying into his chest and being weak and submissive! Meanwhile, the male character is being not even shedding a tear (even if he does look sad, like Edward) is being strong and dominating, hugging his frail friend/lover! The only way I can accept scene like this if the male and female roles were reversed, it was two females, or two males.
As if things could not get bad enough, after this, does Winry try to regain the large amount of dignity she just lost? Does Arakawa have her stand up and bravely inform Edward that she was going with him, to help Alphonse perhaps? No, she has her just sit there, crying and being weak! What is wrong with you, Arakawa Hiromu?
At least in the 2003 Anime, the 'Winry meets her parent's killer' scene played out much better. Instead of breaking down in tears, Winry was strong and refused to cry, as she did not want to be a burden. That is very non-sexist. In the words of Fergie, "Big girls don't cry".
Any female who praises this scene is a disgrace to the female gender.

Can I just give my two cents on this?
This is, in my opinion, absolutely not a sexist moment. I didn't see any sexist parts in FMA, to be honest. Just because Winry breaks down in tears, it doesn't mean Arakawa was degrading women or something. Nothing in this scene would have changed if, for example, Winry was a boy and Edward was a girl. Arakawa just put the scene in to establish a new, stronger kind of bond between Edward and Winry. To say that Winry was being a weak, stereotypical insult to the female gender is just ridiculous. She's a very strong female character. But she just found out that her parents were murdered by the man standing in front of her for no good reason. Wouldn't you be at least a tad upset? Just because there's one scene where she breaks down and cries, that doesn't mean she's weak.
There is a scene where Edward cries, too. It isn't as dramatic as Winry's scene, I'll admit, but he does cry. Unfortunately, it's been a while since I've read the manga, so I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure it's the last chapter when *spoiler* Hohenheim offers up his Philosopher's Stone to bring Al back. People like you often look too deeply into tiny details, practically searching for reasons to get mad. Don't forget Izumi. I know she's not included in this scene, but she's an example of a female character who never breaks down and cries. Well, in the manga. Don't say she cries in the 2003 anime, I know she does, but that entire anime had a completely different feel to the manga, and in my opinion it just sucked. But that's another rant waiting to happen, haha. Anyway, not every woman is strong emotionally. At the same time, not every man is strong emotionally. There are things in all of us that would make us act the way Winry did. I guess the murder of her parents is kind of a touchy subject, eh? I just don't see how you can call Fullmetal Alchemist, of all things, sexist, while LOTS of other manga and anime are much, much worse. Women prancing around half-naked, or even completely naked, a bajillion panty shots, nothing more than a sex symbol. Like *sam22222 said, FMA has plenty of female characters who are just as strong as male characters, like Ranfan, Izumi, Winry (yes, she is a strong character. Just because she cries, it does not mean she's weak), Riza, and Paninya (Minor character, but still). Anyhoo, sorry for the long comment. Just wanted to get that out there. I guess I'm just a "disgrace to the female gender," eh? ^^

Ok well this is quite a long message, but i have a reply non the less.
I think your opinion is stupid.
Do you scrutinise every little detail thinking its sexist? I find Fullmetal Alchemist to be one of the least sexist animes/mangas around to be honest.
Sure not all females would fall in a heap, some would stand strong and confront that man that killed her parents in cold blood. But i think its safe to say that there would also be a high amount who would feel break down.
Fullmetal Alchemist is full of strong female characters, as well as strong male characters. Edward has broken down in tears before, and Winry has helped him, and vice versa.
Just because one scene doesn't make it sexist, Winry is allowed to cry if she wants, that does not make it sexist.

FMA is one of the most sexist manga written by a woman. I do like it, but That is the way I see it and I am sick of blind fools like you whom do not realise this. I have an explaination on my profile. This was part of it: [link] . Do tell me what you think in a non-flaming tone.
No, it is not. They are almost all in the shadow of men.
And when has that happened?

I see how the eyes are a little strange, but the shading isn't too bad. Overall it's hidden well, I looked over it and didn't see that. XD
