Ginny could have easily been sorted into Slytherin House in the second movie/book due to her possession of Tom Riddle's Diary.

Not sure about that. The Hat looks into the wearer's mind, and though she possessed the diary, Riddle had not yet possessed HER. I suspect outside influence has no effect on the Sorting Hat's decision, because the Hat only mentioned Harry's potential and desire to prove himself when considering Slytherin, it didn't acknowledge the fact that he had a bit of Voldemort's soul in him.
