The Ovidius Class includes 3 subclasses: the Montana(Assault Cruiser), the Hood(High Mobility Cruiser), and shown here is the UES Yorktown. When the ships were all sent back to drydock for refits after the Martian Uprising was crushed, they were installed with numerous improvements that were too power-intensive for smaller vessels. The direct firepower on these cruisers is immense but the greater obstacle is their powerful energy shielding, capable of withstanding six times the normal amount of incoming fire although limited to a 180-degree arc. They also employ the same dual-shielding technique as Fafnir, one lighter shield is built into the hull plating and can counter pursuit-craft weapons while the larger directed shield protects the front half of the vessel from incredible amounts of directed energy weapons. This allows smaller support vessels to take formation behind an Ovidius to gain protection from long-range weapons and then break away once the battle is more properly joined.

Unlike many of the other Earth Forces ships, the Ovidii possess many amenities that are usually only found at stations and ports. This is so that the ships could stay in operation and support a small fleet for months and possibly even years without access to major facilities. When they were first built, proper FTL was not yet an option and so they were built large, with plenty of space for food production and large stasis bays for the majority of the crew. Once FTL became possible, the ships really came alive. All the additionals changed their role somewhat as no longer being just a massive weapons platform that could move. After Mars was pacified and the genetically-enhanced Myu were defeated, the Earth Union began to spread out to surrounding systems with many of these ships escorting early colonial fleets.

Later the Colonial Administration would build vast numbers of their own cruisers, all limited in firepower to ensure that they could never hope to succeed in a rebellion. These older vessels always remain under the authority of the Earth Government but were often allowed to function autonomously within their sectors. This led to many of them becoming de facto flagships for sector defense operations. When the war with the Saurians comes into full swing, most Ovidii were not sent to fight them, instead most of the fleets they commanded were commandeered so that the largest ships left in their sectors would be those whose loyalty was beyond question. As the war dragged on, this was revised. The older ships were brought in for weapon refits and sent to the front. Many would command fleets operating for long periods of time behind enemy lines. Eventually, those that survived would achieve vengeance for their fallen sister-ships at the decisive Battle of the Sirian Gate.
