Sandy87 — Sten Approves

Description I grabbed my little brother's copy of Dragon Age: Origins about a month ago and began playing through it. I let Sten out of his cage, talked to him a few times, and had his approval up to 75 BEFORE I EVEN LEFT LOTHERING.

I was just a little disturbed.

I mean, yeah, I saved his life and he's rather friendless at the moment, but isn't this supposed to be the grumpy guy that hates everybody? I was expecting to have to spend 3/4 of the game just getting him to tell me what's what, but instead he's my best friend in five minutes (and then I promptly replaced him with Wynne, because the party needs a healer. I'm so mean). Save the "kadan" stuff until after I can pick you out of a lineup, sheesh!

I know it's due to Bioware setting his approval jumps larger due to a smaller line set (most characters give one or two and occasionally four for a good answer; Sten gives four quite often and occasionally eleven if you talk about cookies), but it's just a tad ridiculous. I mean, Alistair had been following me quite a bit longer and only had 15 or so approval, and he's very goofy and friendly; you'd expect him to warm up faster. Whoever coded Sten's lines forgot to check their math, or just counted on players not noticing.

But yeah, that's what inspired this.

You're his soulmate, you should search a romance mod for him.

ROFL! Nah, I see Sten as more the obnoxious best friend who helps you torment everyone else, and when no one else is around, you torment each other (am I the only one who teases her friends mercilessly? I can't be).

A cursory search of the 'Net reveals that no such thing exists, much to the consternation of many a fangirlspawn (and the game's been out three years. I'm highly surprised, given that the DA modding community seems fairly active). As with the above cookies, it's something I could do if I knew anything about modding (VO could be accomplished by chopping up and rehashing lines already recorded; his voice is fairly level, so what works in one place should work in another easily enough).

I have never been able to make Sten like me :/... Every time i walk up and talk to him i save. Then I am relived when i get nothing... i always seem to say just the wrong thing and get Rivalry points... The fact that you can make him like you means its possible! now all i have to do is figure out how.

Well, if you can't say the right things, there's always gifts! He likes paintings (sooooooftie), and there's a sword in Redcliff that he's extremely fond of...

I have yet to find cookies, though, even in the form of a mod (Feastday Gift DLC totally missed a great opportunity, though that book is at least useful). If I knew the first thing about making DA mods (outside of simple face morphs), I would totally do a "Cookies for Sten" mod, just for giggles.

Nah, I'm 99% sure that was just a load of BS he made up to get Morrigan off his back (killing your females is a bad breeding strategy, after all). The only thing that may have been true is his assertion that he finds the act unpleasant (being thrown together with a random stranger or even someone you actively dislike and told to go make a baby when neither of you is in the mood...yeah, that's not unpleasant at all).

I was just meaning sanity in general. I mean, we know Sten isn't the most stable guy around, and I think my Warden has thrill issues, with the company she keeps...if love makes you crazy, hoo boy. XD

LOL, okay then. Their relationship would certainly be interesting!

Although I did run across a very funny forum post from Bioware stating that Sten may or may not have been in love with the Warden...you'd just never know it 'cause he's Qunari and wouldn't admit it with a level four Coercion check...

I saw your comment just before bedtime. Figured I'd go find that post, since I just saw it the other day.

...Stayed up all night because the Internet has apparently eaten it and no amount of searching has turned it up. ಠ_ಠ

I know it was on the official Bioware forums. I know it was made by Mary Kirby, Sten's writer. I just can't seem to FIND IT. Argh, it's making me crazy!

Stupid post...

Don't flatter yourself too much. I have my own reasons.

...Pffth, now I sound like Sten. This is why I say I could write a romance mod for the fangirlspawn legion if I knew the first thing about making mods. Of course, my brain has also adopted Sten's voice as its new method of mocking me, so now when I think I'm being stupid, there's a chorus inside my head instead of just my own mind...it's gonna get crowded in there real fast...

And I got sleep. It just happened to be from 6:30 AM to noon. Not enough, but it was sleep. Saturdays are awesome like that.

Well good on you xD

Ha ha, well, get me someone who knows

1.) How to rip voice files from the game so I can splice them together,
2.) How to make a step-by-step tutorial for cutscenes and coding that even a complete mod n00b can follow, and
3.) Has the patience to bug-hunt when I inevitably bug the whole thing

and I will get right on that mod. As it stands, the most I could do is type up a script in the toolset; I have no clue how to do anything more, and the toolset wiki kinda scares me 'cause it seems a touch incomplete in places.

Dude, you managed to find ALL his proper options, the ones we spend FOREVER trying to find. I salute you.

Sandy87 In reply to JadeAnnabelArt [2012-10-14 13:41:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, I will admit to saving and reloading, often intentionally getting it wrong just to see what happens (I am a sucker for dialogue trees, moreso for funny ones). Then I discovered the developer's toolset, which allows me to read all the response options and avoid the need to save and reload unless one just seems particularly funny.

There is a certain logic to his response preferences, though. Without spoiling anything, here's a general idea:
Everyone says to argue with him. This is true, mostly, but don't be too closed-minded. If he breaks out the logic on you, grudgingly admit that he may just have a point (particularly if he says more than five words). Also don't go against your duties as a Grey Warden just for the sake of an argument.
Basic kindness actually will get you a little ways, as long as you don't go sentimental. Offer help and basic necessary politeness; there's a difference between having a sense of duty first and just being a dismissive jerk (which Sten himself forgets from time to time).
Figure out his snarky sense of humor and either complement it or play along. Especially playing along; I get the sense the other Qunari weren't interested in playing and most people are too scared to banter with him.
Related to the above, idle threats. Seriously. Tell him you're thinking about putting him back in that cage. I'm not sure if he just likes your spunk, or if the thought of something half his size trying to wrangle him is just that amusing, but you'd be surprised how far that gets you.

Yeah, thirteen files got me to 100% with all my camp buddies. (rubs back of neck) I'm not obsessed...

Qunari are weird like that. They hate everyone, but they become best friends with people in an hour.

...Qunari are weird.

Indeed. He does kinda grow on you, after a while, but Qunari are wierd and I think Sten's among the stranger ones.

Defiantly normal.

Hehe, I know what you mean! I once came out of a single conversation with him with something like +16 approval, and meanwhile everyone else usually just gives me +4 at most. I guess when he likes you, he REALLY likes you.
And, d'aww, Sten cuddlin'.
I think your Warden needs a pry bar.

shkkf In reply to MinionRipley [2012-10-14 08:25:13 +0000 UTC]

Don't forget to heat it! And a metal chewing bar and a harnass.

Sandy87 In reply to shkkf [2012-10-14 13:11:53 +0000 UTC]

A harness? Nah, I think you mean a better set of armor; that wimpy leather stuff rogues wear is hardly effective against even a moderately friendly bear hug.

Though first, I think she needs an oxygen spell. Even a white-hot pry bar isn't going to get his attention fast enough. XD

Qunari hate mages, but they sure do seem to keep the healers in business...
