Not sure if they're the fire ants that are found in more humid, warmer areas (so, not where I live) but they could be, or are just similar. I have been bitten by an ant near my house that sure felt like a fire ant bite, so possibly these red ants and fire ants. I guess if anything sinks its mandibles into a living thing's skin, it'll burn to some degree, especially in the case of venom.

Speaking of venom....some young men in various parts of the world have to do a certain rite of passage to become men that involves sticking both hands inside two mitts with hundreds of bullet ants inside. I'm glad no one expects me to become a man (the fact that I'm a woman notwithstanding), because I would not enjoy that.
