Description Mermaid with a little twist... Made with ordinary coloring pencils, but had to touch up a bit with Photoshop.

Well, from a point of view it can be called artistic creativity, but if you seek a more prompt answer that is a back fin which is pretty common in mostly every kind of fish, however the perspective is indeed deceptive.
But I wonder, what was your guess?

Honestly? It almost looked like a second tail.

But I know the kind of fin you're talking about, yeah. Forgive me, I'm just so used to seeing it on the back of the merperson's torso.

Yeah you are right it is a bit deceptive, I also struggled where to put that back fin, originally it started from the middle of the back but didn't want to cover up the naked part so i moved that down

Ah, I see. Makes sense. Though I think what also threw me off was he gap in the tail trunk/legs. Hence why I thought it was growing from... Well, you know.
