Wow. From the looks of things, I don't blame Quatre for going off the deep end. Looks like someone tried to blow them all up again.

I never decided exactly what it was, but your idea sounds entirely like him!
The first and only time we see him go off the deep end, It took the nearly simultaneous deaths of his father AND sister (they never say the sis dies for sure, but it's kind of implied) , all the stress between himself and his father/his father and the colony, the fact that Quatre and the other pilots had already been denounced/betrayed by the colonies, and all this while he was still recovering from being injured and floating around in space!
Since he seems to have such a long fuse, you can imagine what it would take this time around. I think someone trying to kill his friends, and perhaps almost succeeding, or trying to break them in some way... It would have to be really, really bad. Someday, I or someone else will write a fanfic about this.

Actually in the Manga both die in an entirely different way saving Quatre's life making the whole Quatre losing it combined with ZERO induced hallucinations thing a whole lot less weird and his actions make a lot more sense too given how OZ in the Manga does away with the Winner Family's power over L4...or tries to. Quatre survived after all.

They both die in the manga? Ah...ok. In the show Iria's death is more implied- I know plenty of people who think she survived but just got hurt, and others, like me, who think she broke her neck and died, or summat like. That does make way more sense to me that he'd lose it after FEELING (empath) two close family members kick the bucket almost at the same time. I think the pressure and persecution from OZ would just be the cherry on the massive ice-cream sundae of brain-breakage. Poor baby...

In the manga they're in Winner mansion and there's a crowd outside protesting the control the winner family has within L4.
OZ had soldiers hide among them that bombarded winner mansion right at the moment Quatre and his dad had the whole 'Pacifism or no pacifism' argument and Iria was there to support her brother. Father and sister both tackled Quatre to the floor as the whole building exploded. Quatre survived because his father and sister shielded him from the explosion.
Seeing OZ use innocent people in such a way that it seems like terrorists did it along with losing his father and possibly the only sister who ever cared about him (Because I have no doubt not all 29 were as understanding as Iria >> ) made him go off the deep end and because OZ made it seem like the protesters did it Quatre wanted revenge against OZ and built ZERO resulting in his being controlled by ZERO in an already not very good mindset thus Que maniacal laughter and bout of ZERO induced insanity.

Is this the manga of the original show? HOW DID I MISS THIS MANGA???? The show has protests against the Winner family, and stuff gets bad, but yeah, I don't remember anyone bombing the mansion. Zayeed just goes up into the resource satellite and blows it and himself up. I like the 'protect Q from explosion' thing, though. I can totally see him crawling out of the rubble, looking half-dead and dazed, and then going into an empathic rage because he can't feel either of them anymore. O_O (I'd have to say I agree on the 29 sister thing- even if they had no actual problems with him, it seems like he's not close with any of them. They're probably too busy with their own lives. ) I also have this theory about his specific empathic brainwaves feeding ZERO ...but that's an essay for another time.

In the anime Zayeed (is that his name? O.o learned something new) went to the resource satelite.
The manga Kidou senshi something gundam W shows however a bombing of the mansion.
Apparently that's not okay with tv land for some reason so it was changed.
My theory is since I myself am an empath is that ZERO is the big problem.
Being already grief ridden Quatre wanted revenge on those who killed his dad who had only the best intentions for L4 in mind.
ZERO in the show is already stated as being a program that integrates with the human brain and psyche thus illusions happen.
My theory though is that because Quatre is so overtaken by his grief and his anger ZERO was able to control him more and thus led to his bout of insanity increasing. However ZERO is a machine it can't compensate for human skills like free will and right and wrong. It sees a unit in front of it and that unit becomes the enemy because it is in the way. ZERO can't differentiate between allies and enemies because it is a machine. That's why Heero began to lose sight of his enemies. ZERO was trying to override his brain and Heero's free will kicked in by saying no these aren't my enemies. ZERO doesn't comprehend ally/ enemy relations and thus counters no they're before me they must be an enemy. Until Heero was able to realize that ZERO was making him attack things that weren't his enemy he had trouble.

That's his name in comics/credits/official printed material etc. as far as I've been able to find out. I kind of prefer the bombing, to be honest. I wish they'd done that! I always thought Zayeed committing suicide was...kind of iffy, given what we know about his character.
My theories about Quatre is that he had an empathetic meltdown which ZERO exploited (more or less what you said) . And ZERO's computer brain, which as you said has no concept of nuance with human interactions, would totally warp his poor brain in that way. I love how, in that scene when Heero starts to go nuts, Quatre seems to push his psyche on him to snap him out of it (the show is never clear on what Quatre's powers are, they're just left as ambiguous hints. I just love the idea that Q is trying to do everything he can to stop Heero, and what he does there may not even be conscious. )

I read somewhere that a lot of things in show were by the creator left as such for the fans to interpret. Zechs and Noin are also the only couple for that purpose that he actually allowed to be obviously a couple. He wanted the rest of the relationships to be interpreted by the fans.
I do however believe that Quatre empathically reached out to Heero and this somehow brought up the memory of relena. A lot of people think it odd, but I don't since it was explained that Heero was a kind boy with strong feelings toward peace and in my opinion to him Relena is the very light that stands for peace. She represents what he's fighting for with her ideals and so it makes sense it's her he calls out to. The golden glow is totally manifested empathic energy to me >>
Quatre absorbs it and realizes it's Heero's feelings about a person and earth X3 Quatre just didn't want Heero to make the mistake he made and end up regretting it. I believe that just that makes Quatre very strong because he's able to realize what he did and grief it as well as move on and not let his grief hold him back.

I liked that about the original show. Frankly, I still interpret the five as friends/brothers-in-arms. Like, the whole thing is about them learning to work together a la My Little Pony...but with Gundams XD But yeah, the fun thing is, you can take most of the relationships how you want. (Zechs and Noin excluded) .
Totally agree with you on Quatre's strength! He's especially strong because even though he's an empath (which may have an effect on his fighting- imagine if you could feel those you kill O_O ) , apart from a brief meltdown, he doesn't lose his gentle nature. That's one of the reasons he's my favorite. I also love Heero because he's really kind at heart, and that's still a part of him.
But yeah, I could analyze that scene, and the whole empathic bond between Heero and Quatre all day XD

But yeah there's a reason why I don't like people who claim to be fans of the show, but can't be bothered to read the manga.

Irks me to no end. Wufei is my most favorite pilot simply because the manga and also he was the only one that realized Treize set them up.
Nother point that Wufei x Treize...sorry, but no. Manga. Wufei has very strong personal reasons to hate the man and would NEVER be romantically interested in that man >_> by no amount of suspension of disbelief...
But yeah I could keep going all day about the deep rooted traumas all of them have and why this makes their fighting for peace even more awesome!

I love Wufei! He's much more complicated than fans often give him credit for being. Also...yeah, I have to agree on the 5xTreize pairing. It never made sense to me at all. People are going to continue to ship who they want, so we'll just have to disagree with them XD

It's about 2 girls who are so called sleeper assassins. They were brainwashed sort of to forget that their mission is to kill the boys so they could get close to them and then when they remember their mission kill the boys, but after having spent so much time with them they no longer are sure if they should go through with their mission and one of them is re-captured by the enemy and brainwashed all over only it goes wrong and she forgets everything including the child she had just given birth to. It's real sweet I think. It will be my first time writing more of a Wufei and Heero point of view as I usually tend to have Wufei and Duo be the ones the girls fall for, but somehow I have this cute scene I'm working on a picture for now of Maighenn (one of the girls) introducing Heero to icecream as an excuse to kiss him. See she acts all duo like (cheerful and outgoing and brave) but she's very shy and so instead of trying to tell him she loves him she uses the ice cream on his face as an excuse to show him how she feels LOL

Haven't been on much this summer either mostly though because my mom got very sick and was in the hospital more than at home from may till august...so yeah occupied.

Yes, she has a heart rythm disorder. You have the bossom and the chamber in your heart and they beat in sync in a normal person, but with someone with a rythm disorder one or the other beats faster. So in my mom's case her bossom was beating faster resulting in a 180 a minute heart rate. In other words she was continually running the marathon while lying in bed. They had to do this reboot of her heart to make it stop beating so fast. They turn off her heart and then restart it sort of. This was successful thankfully, but she'll likely be on heart medication and blood thinning pills for life. Which isn't so bad. At least her heart rate is now back below the 80 beats a minute (aka normal beat).

Yush that's what we thought too. Actually she was constantly exhausted so she couldn't really do much other than lay in bed and not move much. Just before the treatment it'd gotten to the point where the 7 steps from the door to the toilet were about all she could walk without needing to sit down and rest in between and dad had to get a wheelchair just so she could leave the house with him. It was pretty scary to see her like that.
