Description EDIT: Fixed some of the linework and moved Marceline's bow. Auuurgh little mistakes.
I can't believe I drew fanart. BUT IT WAS WORTH IT. Done in Illustrator.

I kinda fizzled out near the end and I have some issues with it butIjustwantittobedone.

Anyways. PB’s dress is this one [link] Marceline’s dress is my design [link] minus the pinstripe plus the gloves. I used this umbrella [link] though I screwed up the design a bit and decided not to fix it.

I do love how the girls came out, and the strawberries are…passable. I might screw around with them in photoshop but that’s not happening tonight.

Apparently, this particular pairing has become A Thing Of Controversy, what with videos being pulled down and the creator acting like a jerk. I don’t know…why the studio threw a hissyfit over fans having fun and being enthusiastic about the show, but there you go. Yamino [link] and AlbinoWonderland [link] have much more info on their blogs than I do, so go check them out.

I think the idea of these two being a genuine, official pairing is quite fascinating - from what I've read it's highly plausible and I just saw that controversial episode... IT WAS EPIC. Marceline's singing was so emotional :') Finn's was epic too. And I KNOW for a fact that PB/Hynden Walch is a good singer... ever heard 'Mad Mod World'? THIS SHOW CONTAINS SO MANY GOOD VOICE ACTORS. Even SPONGEBOB.
So from that episode it is definite that they've both known each other before and were at the very least close friends... and there are very definitely undertones of something more.
And there DOES exist a thing called 'Bisexuality'. These could be extremely flexible characters. Bisexuality is actually never really explored on TV.
Damn it, I knew about this show for a while (I'd soon discover anything with the voice of Starfire as a key character) but I've never gotten round to watching any of it til today. I saw a review for it and went 'I must watch this...' because it looked quite demented in a sunny way. xD
So yeah, this controversy with fans and even creators overreacting? Does it still exist? Or has there been some kind of closure by now?

Back to the topic of your art, VERY good! I like their hair, and Marce's facial expression makes me laugh.

I didn't know this pairing had a controversy, it has a cute preppy/goth relationship.

I have no problem with the pairing. I find it very tamed and adorable. I think people are butthurt about the whole thing, because the lesbian pairing involves to attractive girls.

Practically done in the same style as the show, very nice!! Like the tender moment between the two, very...sweet *groan* lol

lol I used images/background paintings as my references for the characters and color, so it should look like the style. IDK it was one of the easier styles I've worked with.

Normally I don't do sugary-cute things but for some reason these two just bring it out of me. Thanks!

Thank you! At first, I saw all the art on Tumblr and went "There is NO WAY a kid's show in the U.S. has overt lesbian subtext."

Then I watched the episode, and went "THAT WAS ONE LINE AWAY FROM BEING TEXT." Thus, even thought I don't normally do fanart, adorable cartoon lesbians is something worth drawing, dammit.

...I should state I wrote this before my tea so I'm not sure how coherent it actually is.

This looks awesome!!
Isn't Illustrator GREAT for making these kinds of illustrations? I'll take Illustrator for illustrations over PS any day eahahha!

Anyway, I gotta read on about what happened, cause I only saw Fred's post about the video after it all happened and the video was already taken down! Hmmmm!

SapphireKat In reply to Ellygeh [2011-09-30 12:32:42 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Depends on the piece- sometimes I use Photoshop for color and Illustrator for linework. For digital comps and tonals, it's Photoshop all the way.

But super-clean linework? Only Illustrator. Otherwise it's like pulling teeth from an angry, rabid weasel hopped up on speed.

I'm not exactly sure what happened because the details are mixed up, and a lot of info is missing, but I am positive I should be yelling at someone. I just need to know who.

Ellygeh In reply to SapphireKat [2011-09-30 13:55:54 +0000 UTC]

Ahahehahah yeah exactly!! I've spent days trying to fix lines, while I could've just done it in AI, so I know about the anger you're talking about ahahaha!

As for the whole controversy thing about B/M pairing, I think I got it some of it down:

As far as I've noticed, Adam Muto was the one who over reacted over the matter, making unnecessary comments about Mathematical, and the fans got in a really loud uproar about it too. And I don't think there's really no one to yell at, since all sides are all right on some level. I really disagree with the way Adam Muto acted, but I don't disagree with Fred from Frederator for shutting the video down. I think the video would've been back already if the fans didn't get so angry and made so much noise about the whole matter, and instead just discussed about it on a personal level. I'm all up for equality and I did not see a problem with the video talking about homosexuality, but since the fans made such a huge fuss about it, everyone started paying attention to the problem and keeping the video up would be hurtful for both Frederator & Cartoon Network.

So the issue now is waaaay bigger than just Marceline & Bubblegum crushing on each other.

I believe there is no problem into discussing or talking about homosexuality on children's cartoons, but unfortunately the mass media society does not fully accept it yet. I believe there will be a time when it will(and I'm sure it's not gonna take long), but for a studio/business as big as Frederator and Cartoon Network to not do something about it would cause them lawsuits, more uproar, and more time & money being spent on lawyers trying to solve it all instead of money being spent on production for more episodes of the Series we all love so much.

When one puts oneself in a position of someone leading a company, one shouldn't think about all the money and all the free time to spend that money. Instead, you should think about the huge responsibility and psychological stress you go through everyday thinking about how to always stay at the top at what you do, and keeping the jobs of hundreds or even thousands of people safe. That last part is the most important nowadays, when there are so many people out there without jobs. When you have all that to think about, you cannot let controversies like that affect your business. Hey, there will be a time when someone with a great vision and a supporting crew will step into the media and make homosexuality 100% mainstream, but the place to do it is not on a children's cartoon.

Also, think about this: when we're all on our 50s & 60s, this new generation coming after us will not even see homosexuality as an issue, because it will be so normal for them. We're all gonna talk about how back in our days it was still taboo to talk about it on television and whatnot.

Wow this was really long, I think I'll post this into my tumblr page ahahaha! Of course these are just my opinions, and I respect you 100% if you agree otherwise !

SapphireKat In reply to Ellygeh [2011-09-30 20:49:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, the main thing the fans were complaining about were the Mathematical videos being taken down. The fan who runs it didn't explain why until much later, and by then everyone was rallying against Cartoon Network. To give CN credit, they have been nothing but polite and respectful in the whole situation, from what I have read this morning (okay, afternoon). However, Muto comment's- calling fans morons, stupid, etc. for seeing lesbian subtext- were way out of line, and the fans have every right to complain about that.

I do agree it is a much bigger issue- absolutely! And I do believe a company as big as CN needs to account for all their audience. But, at the same time, the LGBT community is becoming a more prominent media audience, and I think it is time for the makers of media to address that. I don't think they need to make PB + M a canon couple- like you said, society is still getting used to the idea- but allowing the sort of subtext in "What Was Missing", hinting that there may be a crush, and allowing the fans to have fun with interpretations is a good step forward. Plus, it will help normalize the idea of same-sex relationships to kids watching the show! Given CN's reaction to the whole mess, I think they're very supportive of LGBT subtext on their shows! It was just One Dude who was complaining. Hell, some of the other creators and artists on the show have already said they supported the pairing. It was just a lot of miscommunication and wild speculation.

...this is a wall of text aaaaah. You have a tumblr? Where?

Ellygeh In reply to SapphireKat [2011-09-30 21:33:02 +0000 UTC]

Ahehaha the miscommunication and wild speculation was what I meant when a lot of the fans went on a rampage bashing the crew! But that can never be stopped anyway, some people will always be against whatever you do no matter how right or good it will be for them!

And I agree 100% with what you said !

I just don't want them to stop creating awesomeness! That's all that matters to me!

Oh! and my Tumblr is this oneeee : [link]

Ahaha thanks for taking the time to replying me back! I usually don't write large paragraphs of text stating my opinions and etc, so it's nice to know you read through it all ahahah thanks!

Wild speculation is a requirement for fandom, I swear. It wasn't even that bad compared to other fandom (I'm looking at you, Supernatural).

Ha! Same here, although I severely doubt a popular episode is going to stop them, heh.

Are you kidding? I like discussing things and opinions. Especially on dA- it's so rare here (unless you count pointless flaming, and I don't).
