Description - Annual Dragon Hunt 2019 -
Featuring 492 November Rain  and A503 Ceres
---
Prompt: Tales of a previously undiscovered species of sea-dwelling dragons have been spreading through the coastal towns. The queen's guard have offered a reward for anybody that can get proof of its existence. A scale, an egg, Its skull if you should dare, but some proof of its existence. Or are they just tall tales after all?

It was time for the annual Dragon Hunt, several months after the fall of the shadow creatures. It was a beautiful day, with not a cloud in the sky, and a slight breeze blowing, a pleasant change to the recent storms. There had been many reports of dragons of all sorts, with new species being discovered every week. Genji had been raring to go, his first real time with Durango since taking the General home in retirement. Unfortunately, the silver black stallion had injured himself while running through the muddy paddock the week before, and Genji had opted to stay behind to keep an eye on the retired General, lest he decide to go join in on the fun despite his injury.

So Dusk had gone out alone, polishing Nov's tack and her armor, and borrowing one of the newest members of the Queen's Generals, the universe mare Ceres, and set out. It was a poor idea, after all, to hunt dragons alone. She and Genji had learned that the hard way the day that she had won Nov, and Genji had almost lost an arm.

Nov loved the beach. She would run all day if Dusk would let her, and Dusk was sure that Ceres would go along with it. The new General seemed very sure of herself despite her inexperience.

There had been reports of a new type of sea dragon all along the coast. Some claimed it was longer than a ship, with spiked claws and huge fins. Others claimed it was a serpent-like creature, with scales as hard as diamonds and teeth sharper than a gemstone dragon, and a face like something that could only live in the deep. Dusk had, several days before, discovered scales in an uninhabited area of the beach, and a tooth lingering in tide pools that had since disappeared with the rising sea.

For now, she was content to enjoy the ride, the breeze keeping her cool in her armor despite the sun. She closed her eyes for a moment, breathing in the ocean air, listening to the waves lap against the shore, and the birds calling to each other. Suddenly, Nov shifted under her, and Ceres let out a quiet snort. Dusk was instantly alert, scanning her surroundings for what had disturbed the horses. Her eyes caught movement on the water. There, just off shore, was a flash of grey, a serpent like creature slithering through the waves, scales flashing in the light. Dusk gripped her reins tighter, while Nov shuffled her feat, showing uncharacteristic nervousness. The rumors were true. That meant that, somewhere out there, in the deep, a new type of dragon lurked, waiting to strike. Dusk pulled November around and called to Ceres. They would go back to the Castle, grab reinforcement, and return, to hunt the beast.

So, here's my entry for the 2019 Dragon Hunt
Sadly, I had to cut out a bunch of things (Poor Durango, and a couple of additional dragons) due to time. Overall though I'm quite happy with it, especially the dragon! This was somewhere around 30 hours of work, maybe more, in SAI and PS2. All semirealism, although the trees don't quite blend in because I ran out of time to draw the leaves by hand. After judging, I may go back and tweak/add some things. Good luck to all the entrants!

Based my dragon off of a Frilled Shark!

First of all, I love the illustrative quality of this piece. The dual-view we’re given of both above and below ocean reminds me of a Jan Brett piece in that we’re treated to a greater context of the situation than the characters featured in the painting! This is the kind of artwork I love seeing in children’s stories (and that’s a huge compliment because children’s book illustration is a difficult field to master, let alone break into!).

A particularly interesting aspect of this piece is the contrast between the cooler tones underwater compared to the bright, warm colors above. This makes for a visually interesting piece; it’s easy, thanks to this contrasting synergy, to get lost in the details. The dragon is rendered exceptionally well with enough attention to detail that surface texture is suggested (gloss on the scales, sharpness of fins).

What would I suggest for improvement? There isn’t much room to improve this piece, in my opinion, except possibly ambient lighting above the water. From the colors above the water, I would assume this scene takes place between 10am and 1pm. I would like to see some harsher contrast between highlights and shadows above water (some of this can be accomplished with overlays like multiple, soft light, harsh light, and screen in digital software). That would compliment the realism beautifully.

Overall, this is a beautiful composition and deserves high praise for attention to detail, creative juxtaposition of elements, and excellent narrative.

I worked very hard on the perspective and struggled with the transition quite a bit. I agree about the above water lighting, I couldn't quite get the contrast right.

Thank you for the critique I really appreciate the feedback.

I know you did. It's kind of a nitpick, anyway, so please don't take me too seriously. It's a gorgeous piece!

November looks like she has complete control of the situation, and that smiling dragon is going down! c; I hope you're entering your SharkDragon into the den competition, because it looks so cool! Those scales look like they took ages! ^^

Nov is always in control haha. I love her. She's the calm one of the group, Durango would charge in head first!
I definitely am! Hoping to get some sketches done this week after I get some commissions uploaded!
