Description Starlight, Starbright
the first star I see tonight...

She's an art nouveau inspired faerie! She took a really long time to paint - mainly because I was trying to make her as symmetrical as possible. It helps accentuate the mirrored feel. Layering the paint on the wings probably took the most time. I had to balance the saturation with all the wing parts, and both sides of the wings -_-;;; I tried out a salt technique with Kosher salt. It kind of clumped and made circular dots on the wings.

Mediums: pencil & watercolours on coldpress paper

Everything in this painting is ยฉ2008 *solarissky That means it belongs to me and not you. Art thieves are an artist's bane. D:

W00t for the salt technique!
And nice color combination.
I think her face/skintone can use a bit more color, she look a bit yellowish. Or it's just my old screen.

Thanks! The salt technique is awesome X3

Her skin is a little bit yellow - but I chalk that up to her name. I'm incorporating more colours into shadows in my future paintings Thanks for the compliments & critique!

man that salt technique is a pain in the ass, but I love it. it works best with dark colors (especially blue), and it's good to make sure you get your colors to be very VREY saturated. when they're full of water with not as much color (as watercolors should be) the salt technique doesn't work as well.. but then, there still needs to be ots of water. it's a little ahrd to find that balance.

but anyway, the wings came out beautiful regardless. I especially love how much they stand out against the pale colors in the rest of the image.

Thankyou for the tip! I'll definitely make sure my colours are more saturated when I try the salt trick. Do you know if higher quality watercolours produce a better effect? I use student quality I think Thanks for the compliment too, I'm glad you like her!!

crayolalicious In reply to SashaFitzgerald [2008-02-08 05:27:06 +0000 UTC]

I use a student quality watercolor myself, and it always works fine, so as far as I'm concerned the quality of the paints does not matter.

And anytime. Thanks for sharing her

I like the border version better. And I love the outfit, and the stained glass look with her clothes. Her wings I think you did fine with the grainy fading look. Nice colors, they really catch your eye.

Thank you very much! I really do appreciatiate such a thoughtful comment Yup, the border seems to be the crowd favourite. I think it makes it look more polished/finished. I loved painting the wings and her dress.

Decarabia69 [2008-01-12 15:05:27 +0000 UTC]

I think she's beautiful and beautifully done! If you're looking for a few more random "splotches" with the salt technique you might try using a bit less water or maybe even some liquid frisket. The frisket would make a more lacey pattern though. Overall, I think she is some of your nicest work!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SashaFitzgerald In reply to Decarabia69 [2008-01-12 22:19:08 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou very much for you comment!! I would love to know what frisket is, is it like salt? I am trying to use less water with the salt technique, because it is seeming to react better to the paint itself. I have to and get me some sea salt and liquid frisket!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Decarabia69 In reply to SashaFitzgerald [2008-01-13 15:46:37 +0000 UTC]

Frisket comes in two varieties; liquid and self-adhesive sheet. The liguid frisket is easy to use (it's kind of like rubber cement) as you can apply it almost like a thick paint. It rubs off easily with a chunk of soft rubber (usually included when you buy it) and works by keeping the paint off their areas you use it. It's great for highlights especially with watercolors where you can glaze it in several layers for interesting background or textures.

The sheet frisket comes in high tack (really sticky) and low tack (best on smooth supports like hot press watercolor paper). It works by placing it over your support then cutting away the parts that you want the paint to come through. Here are a few links to help you out (although Dick Blick might be pricey):
