Watercolor dyes (same stuff they used on the old comic book color guides before digital coloring came along) and white acrylic.

any specific brands or just regular watercolor paints? would art stores like Michael's carry them?

I've been using Dr. Ph. Martin's Bombay India Ink since I like the shine it gives on the finished pieces. You should be able to find them at Michaels. They come in little bottles with eyedroppers. I add water and/or white acrylic paint to the mix depending on what I am going for (Caucasian flesh tones call for a lot of white mixed with water, yellow, red and a very small amount of blue - or brown if you have some on hand)
