Artist's Notes: Another commission done for . These are the lung sharks of Great Lakes Earth. Evolving from an ancestor similar to our Earth's epaulette shark, these sharks are known to use their modified fins to crawl along the ground. They can survive on land for several days so long as their skin is kept moist thanks to their two fold respiratory system which allows them to breath through both their skin (like an amphibian) and their anus (like a turtle). They are so successful that they may have even outcompeted the lungfish of Great Lakes Earth. I've always been fascinated by early tetrapods and the "conquest of dry land" during the Devonian so this was especially exciting to draw. From left to right, top to bottom they are:

Ratatoskr Lung Shark: a lung shark known for its strong forelimbs and the fact that it can only be found around the roots and branches of the Yggdrasil tree, it uses these limbs both to dig small burrows around the roots of the tree to hibernate during the dry season and to climb up the tree itself in search of food and to evade aquatic predators, based on the epaulette shark, the mudskipper, and the Nidhoggr of Norse mythology

Mottled Muckquill: a species of lung shark that defends itself with sharp spines on its plant like dorsal fins, based on various depictions of swamp monsters

Sandy Squalopod: known for "swimming" through both mud and wet sand as well as walking on dry land, may be the most terrestrial species of lung shark, based on the sandfish skink and tiktaalik

Spiny Toad Shark: a rotund specimen that eats anything it can gets its mouth around and defends itself by puffing up and extending the small quills along its body, based on the frogfish

Boomerang-headed Lung Shark: a more aquatic species of lung shark that typically lives as a bottom feeder using its boomerang shaped head to sense and dig for small animals, uses its modified limbs to navigate through the tangled roots of the megamangroves, based on the extinct amphibian Diplocaulus

Snake-headed Lizard Shark: a voracious carnivore, the teeth on its bottom jaw are so large that it cannot fully close its mouth, based on the prehistoric amphibian Mastodonsaurus, frill shark, and the snakehead fish
