Description THE JEAN GREY SERIES: PART FIVE
*May contain spoilers.*

#1- Circa 1994, in X-MEN #35, upon waking up in their own bodies following the events of the ADV. OF CYCLOPS & PHOENIX miniseries, Jean and Scott found themselves on a SHIELD ship with Nick Fury, who happened to find their comatose bodies in the surf. Jean and Cyclops did a little mission on St. Bart’s, falling through a dimensional rift and helping an old lady named Sunset Grace, and then headed home. The SHIELD folks were nice enough to undress and then re-dress the couple, for some reason I obviously don’t recall. This costume is only used in one issue, but I included it here because I wanted to draw it. And because it’s weird. Like they only had spare parts from a bunch of different uniforms, and threw them together real quick. It’s sort of a costume-loaf. They didn’t even have matching boots. SHIELD’s funding must’ve been cut.

#2- In 1998, Jean and Cyclops take a leave of absence from the X-Men after Scott is critically injured during OPERATION: ZERO TOLERANCE, and settle in Alaska for a while. With UNCANNY X-MEN #354-355, Jean reveals that she has chosen to take on both the code name and the costume of Phoenix. Cyclops flips out a little. Her explanation has something to do with claiming the Phoenix mantel as her own to ease his painful memories of Madelyne and Dark Phoenix or something like that. This started to establish that Phoenix was maybe still an actual part of Jean, an idea used in the X-MEN films and other places, and gave Jean’s powers a more unlimited potential. Cyclops may not have liked it, but I think it was a good move. Embrace the only thing that’s ever been close to cool about Jean. This Phoenix costume is slightly different than the original, with a larger emblem on the chest and a belt piece to match, and I think was often colored a darker green.

#3- Circa 2000, this is the new costume Phoenix took on after all of the X-books jumped ahead six months in time with no explanation or backstory of what we missed in the meantime. I still don’t get that. Anyway, Jean was on her own as Cyclops had become Apocalypse’s host body and apparently died for a while, so I suppose she was in the mood for something different. I like this costume, it kinda has a fiery look to it, even if it doesn’t stand up with the other Phoenix suits. The gold parts maybe should’ve been a little lighter, but I don’t really have a marker between yellow and yellow-orange, so this is what we got.

#4- In 2001, the X-books got yet another revamp, this time into the “NEW X-MEN” incarnation that dropped the superhero tights in favor of black leather school uniforms, which I think was Marvel trying to tie the books closer to the movies. I did not like the NEW X-MEN phase, especially bringing on Emma Frost, except for the idea of turning Xavier’s back into a school, and I absolutely DESPISE Frank Quitely’s artwork. The whole book had a feel like they just found some guys who hated the X-Men and set them lose to mess with everything. But I do like the black leather costumes, I admit. Variations on Jean’s uniform here include short sleeves instead of long, and yellow X symbols on the boots instead of gray ones.
