Description THE JEAN GREY SERIES: PART ONE
*May contain spoilers.*

The Series ~~> [link]

#1- Circa 1963, premiering in (UNCANNY) X-MEN #1, Jean’s original X-Men team costume, worn under her Marvel Girl code-name. The same outfit worn by all five team members, the color scheme and basic costume design have resurfaced over and over again throughout the last forty-six years of X-Men history and endure as a trademark look for the team and the X-Universe as a whole. I guarantee that Jean has worn more yellow than any other comic book character in history, almost every costume she’s worn has yellow in it. She’s like a damn canary. A canary on fire that dies a lot. Anyway, there are a few color variations on this costume that I’ve come across, including black & yellow and blue & white. Occasionally the boots themselves are blue or black with only the fold as yellow. Also, the wrist straps around the gloves are my own touch, just a whim. On a side note, over the course of my research for this series I’ve seen the color of Jean’s hair represented as anywhere from light orange to dark crimson. I went right in the middle with a regular red, which worked perfectly fine. It also tends to be more on the curly side than I’ve drawn it, but I can’t draw curls. Again, I think this is fine.

#2- In (UNCANNY) X-MEN #27, circa 1966, Jean decided to redesign the team uniforms (because she’s a model AND a designer, understand) and the team loved them. The update? Red belts. Those kids should’ve gotten out more. Anyway, she altered her own costume a little further into a slightly more feminine design, the yellow top being more fitted with a plunging neck line. (Having just realized I actually have this issue, I looked a little further into this, and noticed that in the first few appearances of this outfit the blue in the body suit actually goes all the way to her neck, like the rest of the team, and did not show off her cleavage like this until a few issues later.) She also apparently got tired of having hood-hair, and replaced the X-cowl with this bizarre mask. Every time I look at this I hear Hank Venture whisper “I am the bat.” [link] That makes me laugh.

#3- One year later, in issue #39, the team once again decided to humor Jean, and she redesigned their costumes, this time with each member getting an individual look instead of a team uniform. Which is how you get this sort of madness. ~~> [link] I think Jean’s costume was Marvel’s attempt to remind everyone that she was, in fact, a girl. Because girl’s wear dresses, you see. Different variations of the dress include a more fitted skirt, less fitted or short sleeves, and sometimes a black belt instead of gold. The weird yellow mask varies in size as well. I referenced Jim Lee’s version from 1997’s WILDCATS/X-MEN: SILVER AGE one-shot. This is the last costume Jean wore as Marvel Girl for quite some time, as about two years later X-MEN was basically cancelled and the book began running reprints until 1975 when the “New Team” took over. In the time in between, as chronicled in X-MEN: THE HIDDEN YEARS, Jean alternated between this costume, and a black & yellow version of the previous one that I felt no need to include.

#4- When Xavier’s new team, recruited to save the original five from the living island Krakoa, took over as the new X-Men in issue #94, only Cyclops opted to stay on. Disturbed by her attraction to Wolverine, Jean left to try and start a normal life in New York City. (Personally I find ANYONE’s attraction to Wolverine disturbing. ::rimshot:: Thank you, I’m here all week.) This only lasted a few issues, as in (UNCANNY) X-Men #98, circa 1976, while on a date with Cyclops, Jean and some of the other X-Men were abducted by Sentinels into space. A whole bunch of stuff happened, and in #100 Jean, her outfit seen here a little worse for wear, volunteered to pilot the team’s escape shuttle back to Earth, basically sacrificing her own life. Except that’s not how it turned out. I included this as it is pretty much the last we see of Jean before things take a turn for Crazy-No-Way Land…

I think the disturbing part is Scott is the good guy, the one you know you can depend on, the one you take home to meet the parents, while Logan is the bad boy, the one you know that wont settle down and is too wild to tame, hes exciting at first but you know the relationship will go nowhere. Just those conflicting emotions... I suppose she needed a breather to sort things out...
